It is meant to create a space to discuss the issue/feature, since peppy doesn't want any discussion on the GitHub issue itself.

A common request from users is to hide all backgrounds with animu girls. Basically a no-anime toggle.

It keeps coming up so there's definitely a demand for this. It should not be too hard to add this, and backpopulate all existing ranked beatmaps with data for the flag.

Proposal 1:
  1. A new setting in account settings: "Hide anime backgrounds"
  2. Internal teams would flag ranked beatmaps with anime backgrounds
  3. Client support for this (probably lazer-only)
Proposal 2:
  1. An account setting to choose which background tags to hide (all anime, only questionable, etc.)
  2. Use either beatmap tags or user tags system to add multiple categories of backgrounds which users could choose to hide, i.e. background/anime background/questionable.
  3. Rely on crowdsourcing to backpopulate data
  4. Client support for this (probably lazer-only)

This feels like it unfairly targets anime specifically to enforce a negative stereotype.

Instead, I would suggest adding a "replace bg" function that works on any beatmap, so people can replace any unwanted background to black or some preset defaults. You could also add a "download without image" button on the website to make the process quicker.

Additionally, a profile setting for younger users such as "safe mode" could automatically filter all beatmaps containing questionable songs or images in general, nonexclusive to anime.
i 100% agree with this. targeting a certain style of backgrounds just because some people don't like it seems extremely arbitrary to me. letting players choose what backgrounds they do or don't want to see would not only prevent anime from getting unfairly targeted, but also provide value to a much wider range of users.

also, on a personal note, i must say that giving players the option to disable anime backgrounds out of all things doesn't feel right considering the fact that anime is undoubtedly an integral part of the game's identity.

Distinctness of beatmap backgrounds is useful. Instead of replacing the backgrounds with non-unique default image, blank image, or seasonal backgrounds, they could be replaced with some deterministic unique replacement image (for example, some sort of tesselation using dominant colors of the original background). In some cases it would be a positive to preserve e.g. the color scheme of the original background intended by the mapper.
i think this in combination with what @Moebytes suggested above would be a good solution.

imo would be better to just add a hide all bgs button or something, or bgs that have explicit tag on map

"show the generic background for all maps" option imo

like the triangles bg for lazer or the sliders bg for stable
