Conversions now give 0.80x mult?

Context:
I've been playing osu for quite some time, since 2022 to be specific. Now I was on the stable branch of osu up until mid 2022-2023, somewhere in that range, until I switched to lazer. Now I've been playing lazer since then, and up until maybe a week ago, the 4k conversion mod didn't affect ranking multiplayer, now it dos.

Issue:
Are conversion mods supposed to be giving less of a multiplier when you use them for ranked? I'm confused as to why this, all of a sudden, changed despite not being a thing on lazer since I switched to it.

Commentary:
If conversions are genuinely meant to decrease mult, I kind of feel as though it's unfair towards those who mainly play 4K, but still want to play ranked. I'm really bad past 5K, and I can barely play 5K to begin with, but I'd still like to compete and rank fairly amongst those who play with their own conversions.

Any answers or feedback on this would be greatly appreciated, and I'm more than open to discussion/debate on this matter :3

Idk about the change, but I have to say, how is it unfair? You're not even playing the same map as them, really. It also usually reduces star rating. You shouldn't get the same score multiplier.

Btw probably better suited for mania subforum.

Well, it's the same logic behind difficulty adjust. Why should a map be worth the same when you made it easier for yourself as it is unmodified?
Riverism
moved to the mania subforum cause this sounds like mania

I think it's always been like this? (Btw you should try mania specific maps)

Tbf I feel like 'easier' is very subjective in this case. A map could be harder for someone on 4K but easy on 7K, and vice versa. I could be wrong, but going based off the fact that conversions still include all notes, just smushed into 4 lanes, the difficulty is still there, it's just in a playstyle that's more comfortable for those who don't/can't play 4k and up

I could be wrong, that's just my take on it.

The point is that it depends on the player. Yeah, maybe converting a 7k map to 4k might be harder for someone, but how can the multiplier know that? It's just better to err on the side of caution and make it <1x for all keymode conversions. This is a competitive game, after all.

Besides, this change wasn't done out of the blue; it was actually just bringing it up to parity with stable, since that already had a score reduction for using a conversion mod that was different than the original keycount, and lazer just hadn't added that yet for some reason.

By the way, I'm curious as to why you seem to only play autoconverted maps. Like 99% of the active mania playerbase basically never touches them, and for good reason—they're not, like, good maps, or fun to play at all, really, compared to maps made specifically for mania.

Converted maps don't have as many pattern variety too (also don't be afraid to play graveyarded maps!!)

it was added to prevent 4k players from sniping leaderboards in 7k converts
because
- 4k acc players are more developed
- 4k converts are less dense
- 4k requires less finger control

i wouldn't say unfair, quite the opposite its more balanced cuz u get punished for playing a lighter and easier to handle version of the same convert

still its not the end of the world tho, if you're not a tryhard accuracy player you can just ignore it. your plays are still ranked anyways
