Since the first year of my osu experience i found out that there is very much BANGER songs - popular and not, and the quantity of mappers that really love what they do isnt big, and even less who would ever map the song, requested by a random guy, who want to play good map for his favourite song - so i want to map something i like, and now im typing this because i got the wish to map a 35 minute metal arranged touhou song (the whole EoSD) which is absolute banger, i listened for this more than a year and still love it. Even tho this song has more than a 600k views on youtube, its absolutely unpopular and nobody knows about it.

The song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU2XmTGonRY

More precise about how i would map to look like, i want it to be LN/Hybrid maybe somewhere like 6-7*, VERY wide list of exact patterns which will feel good to play, and is based on the song, e.g. when there is a slow part then there is a slower patterns according to it. I wanna make a breathing map, which people and i will absolutely love to play.

There's a guide made by Crisper that is really informative and teaches a lot of mapping fundamentals like layering, consistency, etc. https://docs.google.com/document/d/12TYwo5mi_7go1Jm1jkhtZCYV6aRub94sfCSP8PJT48c/edit?usp=sharing

if you're not into reading, i would suggest icedynamix's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrMkjUYDmKQ&t=2357s despite it being for quaver, it still highlights a lot of mapping concepts important for mapping

While not impossible I would recommend to start off simple with shorter songs to get used to both the editor and actually realizing your ideas, mapping is a pretty long process especially the less experienced you are, so making it a long term goal I'd say is the wisest choice if you want the end product to actually reach your goals.

get used to youreditor of choice for the first song, learn patterns you can use, and practicw. importsnt techniquws are pitchh relevancy and thats it

for how i map, i run through lyrics and make them LN usally and then movw on by placing chords and patterns. assifn sounds to x amount of notes and youre good (kicks are 2, big loud is 3, snare is 1 or 0 dependjnf on how hard ect) thats hpw i map. i know i do 6k but this should apply to 4k

Just like other people, I suggest trying for a much shorter song first, but for more reasons than "getting used to the editor". My experience with mapping is not much, but I think my first experience with it told me a lot, and I do want to get back to mapping my camellia song when I'm off vacation. Anyways, onto my advice and projections...

I suggest trying to map a song that's 1:30-2:30 minutes, and more specifically create a mapset. Why? Because I think knowing how to simplify parts is a valuable skill when trying to get every sound into a map creates cringely dense or repetitive mapping. As well, I just like mapping with the restriction of Ranking Criteria since it gives me perspective on who I am mapping for (P.S. keep referencing RC if you want your map ranked).

Copying and pasting for parts of the song that are practically the same is fine, just drag-hover the notes and press Ctrl+H to flip horizontally or do a slight alteration or both, they will never know. Start with trying to make the map as hard as possible first, and then try to create a difficulty about 1* easier from there. (P.P.S. you can open an already-made difficulty as a reference difficulty, but do not take it verbatim due to what I'm about to write next)

When you map your lower difficulties, you will probably notice timing mistakes or wrong sound interpretations that you made in your higher difficulties, forcing you to go back and fix those. As well, you may get the feeling you are either not introducing a new enough idea between maps or something vastly different, and that really comes down to preference.

Once you are done and happy with your work, go to the osu!mania modding queues forum, share the map with friends (if you have any, I know I don't ;[ ), and wait. You will feel humiliated and I would not have it any other way. Take their advice, apply it to the maps, and absorb it for next time.

Final note, mapping takes LONG. Like, with my camellia map for instance, it's 5 minutes, and the easy diff took me 3 days (I decided to try starting with simplification this time and make progressively more complex diffs). And every harder diff takes longer, I think I spent like 2 weeks for the INSANE-MINUS diff (long story short I made my hard diff too hard), and always at least 1:30 hours per day of mapping on the days I was mapping it, with like 5/14 days of me not mapping but with longer mapping days that it cancels out. My map for Perfect ConfeCute, which is the main one I'm projecting, I think nearly took 4 weeks for the top diff which was then flamed by modders, but it should make me a better mapper. Also mapping LN just takes longer than rice does, I created some 5k charts of mainly rice (I only have one uploaded) and those I completed in a single sitting.

So that's my experience with mapping so far.
