I was thinking that it's very disheartening (🥀) to see that only mania doesn't have its' own unique difficulty names. So I thought of coming up with some ideas. When I hear mania, it makes me think of something electric or Intellectual. So some ideas I got...

  1. Beginner
  2. ---
  3. Intermediate
  4. ---
  5. Professional
Actually this is it. The others don't blend really well. I want some ideas.

Main thing is that default ctb and taiko are very specific in setting and/or characters, with ctb being fruit/food based and taiko being drums and probably some japanese lore I don't know.
Meanwhile, you can tell by the mania default skin how it tries to be reminiscent of BMS or whatever it was called, no specific theming in setting or characters.

If it were up to me, I'd keep it open ended/vanilla as is, though make it apparent its inspired. As well, I'm not a fan of difficulty names that call the player something unironically (so as slowpoke says, "experienced" or "novice" is not something I want to be called by the map I'm about to play and possibly do terribly on):
- Basic (Easy)
- Intermediate (Normal)
- Advanced (Hard)
- Challenge (Insane)
- Extreme (Expert)
- Master/Legendary (Expert+)
Now I do see in the difficulty naming section that "Extreme" is widely accepted for expert+, but hey I didn't need to like it.

Ohhh Basic & Extreme fit well. Advanced would've also gone well but STD uses it for the harder 2*.
I also think intermediate fits better as a hard. Could go like...

  1. Basic
  2. ---(Average?) vvv
  3. Intermediate
  4. ---
  5. Extreme
For normal, maybe something like average or simple? Simple is kinda similar to basic but idk.

I'm aware of advanced being for harder 2*s, it's another case of me not needing to like it. Plus SDVX map naming has ADVANCED/ADV as hard, so I thought I could get away with not mentioning it ("Legendary" references usage of "Leggendaria" for Beatmania IIDX).
As well, this ordering is something I tried to avoid as originally since the issue with putting Intermediate as a hard diff is that it would imply being advanced is worst than being intermediate, which is not how the ordering works. In fact, challenge I had to synonym-insert in there as my order was originally:
- Basic
- Novice/Rookie
- Intermediate
- Advanced (I think you can understand why I don't want this word to define 4*s with the current structure, simply one of those things I dont like as I said)
- Extreme
- Master/Legendary
I know a few 5* osu!trainer rate change maps are called "Challenge" difficulty, and I would like to understand the context of that.
