What will we do when AI mapping becomes indistinguishable from human made maps?

Given how fast AI development has been in image and video generation and based on the fact that the current AI map generators are only on their very first versions, it wouldn't be insane to assume that, in a few years, AI will be able to generate high SR tech maps on par with most ranked mappers.

So what do we do when AI will be able to map not only rankable, but also high quality maps?. With every new revolutionary discovery in the AI field it seems less and less likely that AI will hit its limit before it is able to make those kinds of maps; especially since, while mapping may be hard, it is nowhere near as difficult as art (which AI is already pretty good at).

the same thing that's happening in the illustration sphere, I'd imagine: learn to spot the telltale signs (because it still isn't in fact indistinguishable in the vast majority of cases), take a critical approach, and vehemently shun those who would ruin our creative space with this technology

learn to spot the telltale signs
I doubt that there will be any telltale signs of AI since, unlike art, there aren't 16 million colours to choose from - there's only 3 (circle slider and spinner) plus four slider anchors, and there are only about 2000 hitobjects in a beatmap, not 8.3 million pixels like in 4k images and it is very much possible to modify the output, unlike AI art. And, since the osu! file format and lazer are both open source, hiding something in the file format would not work for long (it would get spotted and people would build spoofers for that)

Also an osu dev already said that there's probably not going to be a reliable way to detect AI-created maps

Yep, here we go...

As you say, yeah it's gonna be mad hard to figure out if it was AI gen-ed or not. Sometimes maybe it's easy to catch onto if the mapper has a different mapping style from his to the AI gen-ed one. Other than that, I got no clue.

What I will suggest though is restricting AI mapping, or at least to a certain degree. I mean peppy himself was displeased with it. His and most of the community's main goal of this game was to focus on the creative side of things and this literally goes against that so idk why an action is not being taken against this.

Also want to point out that this could cause even worse effects on the ranking process or just finding beatmaps in general. I've seen the content bloat, difficult navigation talk everywhere and this could undoubtedly add to that. I search through graveyarded maps from time to time and I'm pretty sure I'll probably see like a couple dozen shitpost maps.

I feel like this should be prioritized before everybody starts "mapping" like pro-box or monstrata lol.

AI mapping is being restricted, in fact. The relevant thread.

Yeah but can't you just lie about it? You could say, "No I didn't use AI" and bam your free.

That's only gonna work if the AI developers agree with peppy's take to stop relases or add safeguards. And OliBomby does not. He wants AI mapping to be a thing (preferrably credited tho tbf). He removed a message from the AI asking users not to upload maps.

And even if he did agree, someone else would've taken on the development (and possibly even some very shady group, like a cheat provider, and integrate it in their cheating tool; and people will say "I've alr broken the rules and risk a 6mo restriction fuck it I'll cheat a few top plays")

Also what action could peppy take against this? Restrict OliBomby?

We need an ai mapper detector

There's already multiple private ones and the developers definetly do have one by this point, but it's not really good since it just detects flaws within OliBomby's AI tool which he, or someone else, could fix at any point and make it undetectable; and, like it or not, this is going to happen. This is not an actual AI detector using AI to detect that an anchor looks too much like AI.
And how exactly do you know that?

I don't.

Multiple people independantly said that they have access to one, but I should've verified that better than with just quotes and may be wrong, deleting that comment as I don't have any hard proof. my bad.
