Permission issues when updating [resolved]

I have osume.exe download a new osu!.exe, which works. When I start osu.exe it closes down saying it needs to update, which it will do through osume.exe. It will give the following error after reaching 100%:

When checking the permissions of osu!.exe, it says I don't even have the permission to view these. I'm the only administrator and account on this computer, and I have full control over everything else in the folder and the entire drive. I can't even delete the .exe. It disappears by itself after a short while. Interestingly, when osume.exe downloads a new osu!.exe, that one does have proper permissions.

I've tried reinstalling Osu in a different drive and it still presents the same issue. I'm out of ideas. Anybody know what's going on? I've seen a bunch of topics with similar issues but none of the solutions worked for me.

That's a real weird one. Do you have UAC enabled? Can you take screenshots of the permission settings for the osu! folder and also the osu!.exe and maybe one other random file in that directory? I've seen this happen before but have never been able to figure out the cause.

UAC notifications are turned off. I've changed the folder permissions to only include my account and removed any mention of 'everyone' or the other groups. This didn't fix the problem. Installing Osu in a folder with normal permission settings gives the same error after updating. Here are the screenshots:

Random file permissions (osu.dll)

Old Osu!.exe permissions
These are the permissions Osu!.exe has after I redownload it through osume.exe. This one is fine but closes down after one second to immediately update. Interestingly, it also wants to update if a friend gives me their updated Osu!.exe.

New Osu!.exe permissions
These are the permissions Osu!.exe show me after updating and getting the error in my first post. I can't do anything with the file, copying it somewhere else will keep the permissions like this and Windows deletes it by itself after a while.

I've always had permission issues when Osu! updates after closing down immediately, but usually osume.exe downloads the latest, working version of osu!.exe for me. To me, it seems like the updater is messing up the permissions somehow but I can't see how this would affect just a few people.

My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate, x64. If you need something else, let me know!

Hello, I am having the same issue and I tried everything.

I have .NET Framework 4.0 Installed.
Tried getting the new osume.exe from the FAQ.
Tried reinstalling Osu.
UAC is disabled and all permissions are given to Osu and the folder.
Tried run it as Admin.
Tried in several other compatibility mods as XP SP 3 etc. neither of these did work.

Well I basically tried all steps from the FAQ and some other additional things but nothing seems to work.

I run Win 7 64bit.

Hope someone has a solution for this. Peace.

EDIT: I just realized that the Osu folder is listed as a shared folder (State:Shared) in detailed options when you click on the folder. Maybe it has something to do with shared permissions not being enabled fully, however I checked mine and I don't see a issue.. I'm not smart, help out.

My osu! folder or its parents aren't shared, so I don't think that could be it.

I hope Peppy will find a solution.

Try resetting permission to default? http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 4d93dcc366

I assume you've already try turning your antivirus off as I can't think of any reason why the file would disappear after a while by itself, searching a bit, try looking at http://www.sevenforums.com/software/720 ... -file.html Booting in safe mode will definitely help narrow down the causes. I doubt this through since you didn't mention problems with updating other programs or deleting files in general.

If none of this work, tell me if you have any other problem/issue on your computer as they can be related. Anything else is appreciated too.

I was able to successfully update Osu! in safe mode. My PC is configured so it clean boots except for a few exceptions. I don't have anti-virus or firewall software on my computer, nor any other permission issues or problems in general.

I'm trying to figure out what services might cause this, but I can't find any that would somehow affect the update. At least I can play again now. Guess I'll mess with it some more next time I have to update, see if I can figure out what's causing it.
