Round 54: 15° Patterns


Nominated by grumd. A technique where you take old-styled mapping with straight, strictly horizontal or vertical sliders and rotate it 15°. In general, a technique that uses flow which is moving at angles between 10-30°.

Take a map with horizontal and vertical sliders only:


Ctrl+A, rotate everything 15°:

These patterns vary quite a bit, but the movements the cursor makes from playing due to the rotation is quite nice (ie: The Pretender).

If used correctly, this works for the mapper in an excellent way!

don't like rotating everything 15 degrees, it looks unbalanced

i would rotate half of them 15° and the other half to the other side

it's not about exactly rotating stuff
it's about what angles you choose when building flow
of course it includes rotating in all directions, ans usually it's somewhere between 10-30°

I like it, feels a lot more interesting than pure horizontal or vertical flow (which I suck at for some reason)

Love it very much. Never use real straight sliders (90deg) again because of this. Although not always 15° though.

An interesting staple of the 2013 mapping style. 5 because of their good looks, simplicity as well as playability.

I love it, because it isn't as boring as if you place those sliders vertically/horizontally. And yeah they are (only if well placed) fun to play.

3, but I wouldn't really call them a "mapping technique." They're just... Normal patterns? I usually see them as excuses to make boring patterns extensively, but rotated, square patterns can work nicely as transitions. I think that clever, slight rotation can work nicely with the arc of the player's forearm, so that could be something to consider.

Also, the coolest people use 30 degrees for delicious triangular alignment.

This is nice, but not really noticeable. It's sort of become the norm to not map only in straight lines, so I think this would be better if applied gradually and properly, in a manner that's actually noticeable. I had no idea The Nature of Dying had a technique like this in it until it was pointed out here, and I can still barely see it. But maybe that's just me.
