how do you change the positioning of the retry buttons

do i merge it together with the pause screen?

and if i do then do i still have to click in the middle

also can the positioning of the retry buttons in the pause screen be different from the fail screen

The buttons in the pause and fail screen are vertically fixed, in the middle of the screen ; if you want to position your button to be somewhere specific, you'll have to multiply your image's width by 2, so you can compensate this effect. you'll be able to click where you want, but the button will still be clickable in the middle
The same applies for merging the buttons into the pause/fail screen, you'll have to make the buttons blank though
