I understand the concern for lower difficulties as it may require too much stamina for rookies (although Taiko and most rhythm games are mostly about stamina and I don't think I have so few breaks in them). Higher difficulties don't have that many breaks because I want the players to feel some pressure when they play this map. The patterns are not very complicated and I want to keep the map somewhat challenging. Also I couldn't find in the RC where it is mentionned that having not enough breaks is unrankable, and if it were the case, I wouldn't care because such a rule would make perfectly no sense and would probably have been enforced by some Taiko no Tatsujin fanatic that does not understand that TnT != osu!taiko. ^^

01:33:113 (169) - remove if you wanted to add more variety you could remove these notes and map to the drums should be a consistent d k d pattern


01:41:513 (186) - move this to 01:42:113 - because of the strong drum sound here


01:46:913 - the last kai time also has to many 1/1 patterns try remapping like the kai time before that

I have practically changed everything here except the ones where I had to move notes backwards because I didn't really liked those suggestions. I have also made a couple of other changes I felt like doing ;)

Fixed Arrival's IRL mod:
- Fixed the difficulty gap within the spread
- Reworked Kantan, Futsuu and Muzukashii to make them more interesting to play and added breaks to let the players breath between patterns
- Changed some finishers that were not emphasizing the music well (also broke some long patterns in Muzukashii to add finishers that emphasize loud beats).
- Set the audio to normal on all timelines
- Some minor fixes

Heya, random mod, just a few suggestions.

  1. I think you can structure the beginning patterns differently, for example like this,cursor on 00:03:713 - . This is because the guitar you follow with 00:02:513 (2,3,4) - repeats at 00:03:713 - , but instead you have a break, which I don't think feels very intuitive. I would suggest a similar structure for the next part as well like this, cursor on 00:08:513 - .
  2. I do not think that the chain of 1/1 patterns from 00:15:713 - until 00:20:813 - , the intensity of the music does not increase, and density-wise this is almost mapped like your kiai section. You should simplify this.
  3. How about you move 00:31:313 - to 00:31:013 - and 00:33:713 - to 00:33:413 - ? I think this would work nicely for the vocal and avoid stacking triples.
  4. Why not make the three finishes starting from 01:13:313 - all K? The pitch is higher here, and it would look nice if you emphasize this difference like you did at 00:34:913 - .
  5. I think that the patterns from 01:22:913 - should not be as intense, the song suggests that intensity is decreasing, And some sort of break after 01:22:913 - would be good for a better transition.
  6. For the final kiai, I think you could try something like this, cursor on 01:48:713 - . I think the current use of k on 01:47:513 - and 01:48:713 - is not good, because the intensity of vocal+instrument suggests that they should be on 01:47:813 - and 01:48:413 - instead.

Futsuu
  1. 00:36:113 (114,115,116) - and 01:13:313 (240,241,242) - should be K imo, better for pitch and consistency with Kantan.
  2. Shouldn't the structure of 00:39:713 - until 00:49:313 - and beginning until 00:10:913 - be more similar? I'm not sure why you would map them so differently when the music is very similar.
  3. 01:08:513 - K? strong finish sound here. Or you use kD for 01:08:213 (222,223) - .
  4. I think you could try out some other patterns to combine vocal and instrument better, for example like this, cursor on 01:10:613 - . This kind of spacing feels a bit more intuitive to me than the 5-note patterns you use.

Muzukashii
  1. Aren't you missing finishes on 01:13:313 (315,316,317) - ?
  2. I think you could introduce mono 1/4 patterns in places like 00:10:313 (39,40,41,42) - or 00:48:713 (206,207,208,209) - with d ddd d D or something like that, would fit nicely with the drums imo.
  3. It would look better for structure imo if you remove the note from 01:15:863 - and maybe try something like this, cursor on 01:14:813 - . Normal k would work well on 01:13:013 - , followed by DDDDKKKKD from 01:13:313 - . And starting the 1/2 patterns from 01:16:013 - instead of 01:15:713 - looks neater when comparing overall structure to the similar part at 01:08:513 - .

  1. I think you should add more notes in the 1/1 section from 01:23:213 - , because the current increase in density at 01:25:613 - does not sound good imo, a more fitting point would be at 01:27:713 - , currently it looks like you are randomly increasing density in the middle of the section.
  2. 00:21:713 (150,151) - and 00:20:513 (141,142) - don't look good imo because they break your structure of usually using two same finishes, and not DK or KD, how about you change 00:21:863 - to D and remove the note from 00:20:663 - to emphasize the strong cymbal on 00:20:513 - ?

  1. I think it would sound better if you remove the note from 00:20:663 - and change 00:20:513 - to K, you have a strong cymbal here.
  2. I think you could use more k in the section from 01:22:913 - , for example on 01:23:813 - and both 01:24:713 (329,330) - .

leaving 01:08:513 - to 01:32:513 - on oni completely without breaks of some sort is a really mean step up from muzu which does 1/2 at best in that section, has frequent breaks and doesn't spam really dense patterning, i think in this regard this spread can be improved.

Muzukashii doesn't even introduce 1/4 as a concept for the most part, like the most intense parts of the map are completely without it 00:10:463 (40,41,42) - 00:48:863 (206,207,208) - are the only 1/4 in the map and at the other part of the spectrum you have 01:46:013 (477,478,479,480,481,482,483,484,485,486,487,488,489,490,491,492,493,494,495,496,497,498,499,500,501,502,503,504,505,506,507,508,509) - pretty complex 1/4 patterning without breaks in oni

not that it plays badly, i just think spread between these two diffs is broken because it skips all normal casual oni players

what you can do to target this:
buff muzu a bit with introducing a few more 1/4 patterns
add more rest moments to at least the first kiai in oni
or simplify a few patterns

While I do understand the logic here, I don't think forcing spread consistency to this extent (as it is only done with Taiko) is a good thing: overmapping the Muzukashii or undermapping the Oni just for the sake of consistency would only ruin the mapset.
If the Oni is too hard for some players, they can train on other maps and come back once they reached a sufficiant level to play it; they don't have to specifically play the Muzukashii of this mapset to learn how to alternate. Oni is only a bit hard because of the fast BPM, none of the patterns are actually complicated, the difficulty is not even somewhat close to an Inner Oni.

i.e. I don't want to add 1/4 that would not fit in Muzukashii (I tried, it was not nice to play) and undermap the Oni as I don't want to make easier just for the sake of making it easier because people who can play the Muzukashii can't play it.

Taiko unfortunatly suffers a lot from people enforcing an unnecessary "perfect" difficulty spread like in TnT and I refuse to lessen the quality of my map for that reason. Mania is way more indulgent with difficulty spread and I have never seen anyone complain about it or even consider it a bad thing.

Feel free to DQ if you want, but I will only do the fixes reluctantly and to the bare minimum.

prefacing this with the fact that i know absolutely nothing about taiko:

from a note density perspective the gap between muzukashii and oni seems ludicrous. if this was a standard map (which it obviously isn't, dunno if the standards are different here) you'd have quite a lot of issues with the spread. looking at sections like http://puu.sh/w386w/570913ead0.jpg 01:51:247 - on oni and comparing it to http://puu.sh/w387g/0e1d96305c.jpg on the muzu shows that your density on the oni is like.. triple that of the next lowest diff. this seems to be the case in some other parts (like where oko pointed out) as well.
if you don't want to fuck up your muzu or your oni to adhere to spread guidelines, how about just adding another diff in between that introduces the 1/4? you use it so extensively in the top diff that having absolutely none in the next lowest diff makes no sense from a spread standpoint and saying "go play other maps to learn how to do this gap" defeats the point of having diff spreads in the first place...

Oni : Normally referred as hardest difficulty in a mapset which follows the essence of a song. Harder, longer and more complicated pattern structures are encouraged.

We talked already in discord about it, but will mention it here too: I checked the whole set, and there are actually more issues than just the spread. Biggest problem all difficulties have is the huge inconsistency in patterns and their missing correlation to each other. Patterns change constantly as well as their rhytm they provide. Stanzas are totally ignored and that leads to a set which shows no concept at all. I actually understand your concern about lower difficulties being maybe boring. Many people have that problem at times. However, the approach was wrong. Because you don't change patterns when you feel like it. You have to change them stanza-wise to keep a clean rhytmical sensation. If you have for example 4 stanzas, you can use in 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 the same patterns.

You are alllowed to have different patterns, but the sequences must be successive to be able to have a clean and coherently beatmap. That's what is behind the word "consistency". It's the most important factor in Taiko since it is a simulated insturment that has to follows the basic rules of music.

[General]


00:30:113 - This is a chorus so you can consider having a kiai here. Since it's not that impactful as the other parts, it can as well stay without kiai to give next one more impact. That's up to you, tho.
01:22:913 - The chorus ends here, so should the kiai.
01:46:013 - The inheritted lines should be changed in each difficulty according to their density of notes so the difference in volume becomes even noticeable.

[Kantan]
  1. 00:10:913 (14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31) - The inconsistency starts already in the first seconds: You constantly change the placement of notes as well as their patterns, making them being cluttered around without any correlation. I will give you two examples about what I mean with consistency:

  2. 00:30:113 - This part is a good example where you did a good job. You try to follow the vocals and stay consistent with the placement / snapping. This also confuses Kantan players way less than a part which contains several different placements / patterns.
  3. 00:43:913 (73) - For the beginning move this to 00:45:113 -. You usually do not end a pattern at the beginning of a stanza (downbeat). It is rhytmical not correct. New patterns / beats should always start at the beginning of a stanza since that's how humans perception to it is, which is also the reason why we have rules and concepts in musics. I think this link about the Music Theory explains it a bit better than me. I didn't study this subject at all, so I'm not someone who can explain it in a short form. But I guess you get it.
  4. 00:43:913 ~ 00:48:113 - Still being at this point, I want to show you a mapping technique that is handy in Taiko, especially for lower difficulties: abekobe. To prevent having everytime the same patterns and possibly some which might be odd, we can basically have in the next section the same ones but switched in colours. Have an example:

    It makes placement consistent but still provides different patterns. This can be even taken further by adding notes in later sections.
[Futsuu]

  1. 00:01:313 ~ 00:10:913 - Oh, here you have a consistent placement of notes. However, patterns can be probably improved. Having variation is fine, but considering that this song has quiet emphasized up-beats, you should try not to ignore them at all. 00:02:513 (5,6) - is a good example. First four notes follow up and down beats decently, and suddenly notes get swapped. Would recommend something like this (once again, just an example):
  2. 00:10:913 - Starting from here, we have density and impact problems. That's actually a serious one. The density is the same like in the previous part even though it has a different pace. It must(or rather should I guess) be lowered down to give these parts different emphasization according to their pace. Additionally, it also helps you to keep your desired idea of having different patterns since it would give diversity in this map and hence, make it less boring.
  3. 01:08:513 - I can just say the same as in Kantan: This is quiet nice what you did here.
Rest has pretty much the same issues as Kantan which should be fixed. I think you can understand if I say that you have to help yourself in this matter since it's your creation. I can only give some hints and examples for further improvement.

[Muzukashii]

Muzukashii has similar problems like the previous maps, but here it is a good example to mention density again: If you go trough the whole beatmap and compare the parts with each other you will notice quick that never mind how much the pace in the song changes, you continue having nearly the same density in most parts. That's one of the very problems when people try to make beatmaps less repeatetive as they usually change the pattering only but do not place emphasization in the density. Have some examples of different places which have similarity in density:

If you take care of this, you would eliminate the problem of having too boring lower difficulties and the spread problem to Oni at once, since it gives more room for a new difficulty as people mentioned already before.

[Oni]

  1. 00:15:713 (59,60,61,62,63,64,65,66,67,68,69,70,71,72,73,74,75,76) - The whole part feels off-beat because you started with all 1/2 tripplets one beat too late considering that you try to follow the vocals. They should start at 00:16:013 - . Like this from 00:15:713 to 00:19:313 -:
  2. Biggest issue I see in Oni is the use of 1/4. I will be honest by saying that many of them do not make sense. Some of them are pretty much off the place as they do not represent anything in the song or are just oddly placed without much connection to anything. Best examples are things like 01:17:363 (267,268,269,270,271) - with 01:19:763 (288,289,290,291,292) - or 01:30:263 (370,371,372,373,374,375,376,377,378,379,380,381,382,383,384,385,386,387,388,389,390,391,392,393,394,395) - where I have absolutely no idea what is happening. There are even whole sections where no structure is visible at all: 01:32:813 ~ 01:39:713 -. Tripplets are placed anywhere. 5plets and even longer patterns just suddenly appear without any real indication.
  3. 01:48:563 (503,504,505,506,507,508,509) - Bounded to the above point, I'm not sure where these odd patterns are comming from. I think you somehow forcefully try to follow the vocals but ignore the baseline of the song which is given by the drum-kit.

Overall I must say that the set is anything but ready for rank and will probably need some overall rework as well as remapping. Main problem is really that you have no real concept you are following to. Patterns are scattered around with the goal to make it not too repetitive but without having an eye on the more important things. Consistency is the keyword here as it automatically regulates for you a proper basis when mapping, is it for the density, quality or even the spread itself. Because of this I recommend you to try mapping this again by following first the baseline and fill it up in a consistenty way with patterns that go according to certain sounds or vocals.

All I can do for now is to wish you good luck in the further process and encourage you to give it another shot and find some more mods.
