- Don't make maps harder than you can do unless you know what they "feel" like
- Don't make maps just to see if players can do them as a spectacle of sorts
- Find maps that give you inspiration, patterns that you appreciate, patterns you want to mimic; Make a collection of such maps
- Do mapping workouts; find a song with an interesting 10 - 30 second section a map just that part every week or so. Come back to it a week later and see if you still like it
- Do mapping remixes; If you think a map can be better, make a copy of the difficulty and change it up, put your own style into it
The following things may help gain a strategic advantage:
- Having friends that are willing to mod your map
- Having friends who are BN who are willing to push your map to ranked
- Creating a M4M mod queue to get your map modded faster
- Accepting mods which more than 2 people say you should accept regardless of your opinion
- Develop your own unique mapping style that people seem to like
The following things may boost your odds at making a map popular:
- The map is std gamemode
- The map is pp farmable
- The map is not made to challenge players
- The map has a song that many players like
- The map is following the current meme meta
- The map has a lot of difficulties
- The map has a guest diff made by a popular mapper
- The map has a cool storyboard
- The map is fully hitsounded
If you want to get other people to play your maps, then become a sellout tier player by hosting a lobby and putting up your maps
