Hello, relative newbie mapper here.

I have a few (Not uploaded/submitted) beatmaps I've made a start on. However, attempting to play from the maps list or testing directly from the editor will cause Osu to hang with the loading circle forcing me to alt+f4 out.

They also appear to bug out on the beatmap selection screen (titles appear in red and cover the BG thumbnail, suggesting an error with them somewhere) yet the mp3 will play from the preview point. They will play on the editor itself.

I've tried comparing the .OSU file of one with a random ranked .OSU file but I have no idea what I'm looking for.

Here's a copy/paste of the .OSU file from one of my barely started maps (Mania 4k, if that makes any difference) in case there's anything in there that would mess with the client:

osu file format v14

It's still a bare bones map to see if I'm satisfied with the results so no tags, BG or anything yet. Single difficulty.

I have also tried editing an existing beatmap from another user (unranked) and saved it locally, which results in no errors.

Some other potentially useful info for diagnosing:

Osu version: Stable b20181231.2
PC: Windows XP SP3
Endaris
Windows XP SP3 somewhat has my alarm bells ringing, lol.

First of all, try fixing your timing points:
Simply cut off all decimals from the first number of your timing point. That number is your offset and as far as I know, decimals are not supported as offsets so this might break the beatmap in the loading process. Should look like this:
5063,500.001680672268,4,1,0,100,1,0

Aside from that the file itself does look fine.

If that doesn't have any effect, I would suspect that your own beatmaps are not properly registered in the local database resulting in the loading problems you're experiencing.
Try rebuilding your beatmap database by using F5.
If that doesn't help, forcefully rebuild it by closing osu!, moving the osu!.db out of your osu!folder (as a backup) and restarting osu!.

Regarding the graphical bugs, I'm not really sure but it would be good to know if you use the compatibility mode within osu!.

If none of the above resolves your problem, please contact a member of the GMT that is flagged with Forum Moderation and ask them to move the thread to the Help forum as it is more likely that you will receive helpful answers there for this kind of issue.

Thanks for checking it out and responding. It did occur to me not long after posting that I probably tiredposted this to the wrong place. I'll contact a mod to see if they'll move this to the correct place.

Despite editing the .osu file as per your recommendation, refreshing the map list, deleting the osu.db file, restarting, all that good stuff, still no joy.

I'm not running in compatibility mode. Doing that causes errors, crashes and pain.

It looks like mine aren't the only maps with the graphical glitch. Peppy's tutorial is the same, as well as a few others, mostly but not all Not Submitted maps appear the same. Difference is they all play. Some have backgrounds, some don't.

Interestingly, after attempting to play it and aborting, connection to Bancho is lost. I've also had to restart my PC a few times too afterwards as it sort of "softlocks".

Since this is now on page 3 I'll give this a quick bump.

Should I consider submitting the beatmap for someone to test, see if it comes up broken for someone else?

Honestly kind of sounds like you are just lagging super hard or you are having some sort of GPU/GPU driver issue and it's not actually your map that is causing any issues. If you want to submit the beatmap for a test though, go for it.

Windows XP also has my "alarm bells ringing" and the fact that compatibility mode doesn't work. But I'd like to know more about your computer specs, other than just the OS.

Map uploaded. https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/923121#mania/1927716

My own maps are the only ones that won't play. Every other map by anyone else has played without crippling problems.

PC specs:
Windows XP Professional SP3
Intel Core Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz
1.75GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7050 / nForce 630i

Didn't you say there were other maps that had issues? Or was that only pertaining to the graphical issue on song select?

You are right though, this is an issue with your map. Seems like it is because the only timing point you have takes place after all of the notes you've place. If you place a single note after that timing point has passed it should starting working.

They were only graphical issues. Those maps still play just fine.

Edit:

The timing point was the issue! Thank you!

Unless I've missed it mentioned anywhere in the wiki, I wish I'd known about this being a thing before!
