You know... I dont think I have ever rewatched a series! I remember all the plot in the anime series I've watched and when I attempt to rewatch it I either get bored because i've seen it before or I suddenly remember a series i might want to watch.

They're just a mass of reference jokes which you can only understand should you have seen the anime or read the manga that has those sections in it. As an example: Hayate no Gotoku! is littered full of reference-based jokes.
The only time it might have been an inside joke is if the anime was adapted from a light novel, manga or visual novel as a vast majority of anime adaptations based from those sources tend to skip on a lot of content.
The anime/manga with the most reference jokes = Gintama.

Durarara. I watched it at least 10 times now. I love the environment design, soundtack, the vibe that it gives off, storyline, character mystery and more. It is the best anime I have ever watched.
