I'd like to continue the all-star train, but shit's going down right now.
An old friend of mine at school has just lost their dad today.
She's clearly hurting. Strong enough not to cry in front of the class, for reasons uncertain, but affected enough to be visibly upset, in pain, vocalizing her will to die (though I've done this too without a real will to die, in the reasoning that vocalizing and externalizing things can help), and such.
...so I'm trying to figure out how to help her.
I never even tried to get to know her.
I'm the worst at emotional support (just yesterday, I tried to help someone with anxiety and autism and miserably failed), and not always good at advice. I can listen but can never seem to understand. I feel concerned enough to want to talk to her and maybe help if I can. I have no idea how I'll do it, but wish me luck.
Alternatively, I'd... I'd like some advice myself.

I'm an apathetic mess with difficulty understanding emotion, should I capitalize on logic, or try and just... wing it?

In some situations it's better to just not say much if anything at all. Sometimes people just need to be alone for a bit to get their emotions out and sort out their thoughts. Especially since she's the "badass girl" type like you think she is, she most likely would prefer to not show herself to others while in such a vulnerable state.
But depending on how close you two are, it might be a good idea to at least let her know you empathize for her. You could even say something along the lines of "I'm here to talk if you ever need to." I don't know this person like you do though so my suggestions may or may not be helpful.

I messaged her on discord with no response. I'll wait it out, but if nothing happens, I'll refrain from prodding much further.
