I noticed some pending maps are months old and have no response in the forum. How does this work? I uploaded a map just today and I'm wondering how long it'll take.

How long it takes is varied. Depends on how good your map is and how oftenly you push the map to its acceptable quality

You can't just wait for a map to be ranked automatically. You need to proactively look for people to mod your map and beatmap nominators to qualify it.
