A new law in Belgium just got out : it's forbidden to buy anything on video games that involves randomness, like loot boxes in Overwatch, or crates in CS:GO. They invite other countries to do the same. Do you think this a good change?

I agree, I really don't like this system, but in another way if every country adopt this system, a lot of free to play and win games will die tho

Pretty sure to there are many more ways to profit off IPs like CS:GO or Overwatch

Hisses at everyone who wants lootboxes gone as I lay my body across the stash of lootboxes I've been hoarding up

Is it literally worded as no randomness?

I think this change is for the better and hope it becomes present in more countries.

Personally, I don't like this. It's not like you're forced to gamble or buy the microtransactions. You should have the option to if you want.

But no one cares what I think so it doesn't matter really.

cosmetic stuff in lootboxes is ok, the law should state that there should be no random advantages ingame

also as stated before it will hurt f2p games

i'm not really sure i want the government telling people what they can and cannot sell as additional extras in their own intellectual properties

stopping kids from gambling is great, stopping adults is... no thanks.

Tbh I don't like this change and it makes no sense imo.
As someone already said you're simply not forced to buy it. Just because someone could get/is addicted to gambling doesn't mean everyone can't buy those random loot boxes anymore. And loot boxes still kind of fund who develops the game so that'll be bad for them.

Absurd law that the government should never have a hand in. I'm guessing it's aimed to protect children, but isn't that part of the point of age rating systems like the ESRB and PEGI? So when a parent buys or OKs a game/movie/whatever, they know what kind of thing their kids are being exposed to. I'm somewhat certain PEGI flags when a game involves gambling or themes of, so, it's not very hard for parents to check that sort of stuff when buying a physical copy or a digital download. I agree with discouraging gambling towards children/young teens, but companies shouldn't be penalised for lazy parenting, and as a result, punished by laws like this.
For an adult, it should be completely your own choice whether you buy lootboxes or not, if the game has a p2w system you don't agree with then you simply don't play.

they then just have to sell stuff and not make users gamble to get it

Ok I feel like I have to justify my opinion now.

"lootboxes are cancer"

Ok so why I believe they are cancer? Well when something forces itself on everything and everyone, I'd consider that cancer. First, my experience with lootboxes is that they are over suggested in a mandatory manner on some game screen or menu the player frequently or must go through. If they exist in their own menu in their own section whenever the player volutarily decides to go there, that's just fine.

Second, if the lootboxes provide items which allow the player to gain an advantage over other players within the game, the players who do not have an income which would otherwise allow them to continuously spend money would experience a more challenging game. Now this is not that big of an issue in single player games, however in multiplayer games, this is definitely an issue as this goes against the principle of fair game against others and introduces a pay to win mechanic.

Third, if I can compare the way developers get people to try lootboxes to something similar, it would be like online ads. Like with ads, companies are willing to push lootboxes into your face and take advantage of any psychological effects which would increase the odds of you trying the lootboxes. Some examples of these psychological effects include the temptation to know what you will get, the desire to get something great, and the subtle animation that lure your attention. Kinda reminds me of that old school "YOU'VE WON" eye melting flashing ad, but improved well enough not to be annoying and work.

So if they are to remain, they need to be made less unfair toward gameplay, less suggestive, and less addicting

As someone who have played an MMORPG that requires an intensive amount of farming (which i played for 2 years). You will realize how different it is to be a f2p player getting to the top, compared to cashing out to the point you become the best. The feeling of reaching the end game without buying anything with real money, the satisfaction is really different. It's like when you build your own dreamhouse, and you compare that feeling with buying your dream house. The thought of "I build this myself!" is what makes it worth it.

As for cosmetics, such as CS:GO lootboxes. I think they're ok. it doesn't give any in-game advantage. But if the lootboxes get to the point of becoming mandatory. It is cancer

Do card game booster packs count as lootboxes?

Yes

I don’t hate lootboxes but I hate any game that has P2W mechanics and intentionally avoid those games. Now should the government regulate this? I’d say I’m about 50-50.

Part of me is selfish and wants the government regulation as this will stop games making P2W random lootboxes which would mean more games would be how I want them.

On the other hand I fear this is a rabbit hole and could only mean other stupid regulations appearing in video games.

I guess what I really wish is that people would just follow me and boycott games with P2W lootboxes. If the companies start hemorrhaging money and see the lootboxes scheme doesn’t work they’ll stop. Market pressure is really the best solution but convincing a large enough majority to boycott is the hard part.

Actually came to say exactly this

Of course it's stupid. It's an example of a nanny state interfering in people's lives in ways it's not wanted. Also, it's trying to make out as if buying lootboxes is similar to gambling in a casino or something.

It's just that some companies (wink-wink) turn lootboxes into real-life gambling.

How do they turn it into "real-life gambling"?
