Number of beatmaps owned (and played) proportional to skill?

Hey all, first post here on the forums. I'm (relatively) new to osu and noticed something interesting.
About 2 months ago when my pp was in the 400 range, I only had about 100 beatmaps downloaded (of which less than half is within my skill level) and kept replaying those maps over and over again. I had trouble gaining pp beyond 400, and I thought I wasn't improving at all.
So not long ago I went ahead and downloaded some more maps, now sitting at almost 500, and I encountered a lot of new patterns. I played almost all of them once, and just from doing that I gained lots of pp (and skill) that way.

What I'm wondering is, if you play a bigger variety of maps, does it make you a better player? If I download 20k beatmaps and play every one of them in my skill level, will my performance rank lose a digit? Is that also why people don't recommend retrying the same map too many times?

You mean to say that if you play more you get better? woah

Here's some thoughts from some casual player who has been around for a while.

In terms of PP:
- Each map gives you PP but because of weighting most of them are less than 1PP
- Amount of different submitted scores gives you some bonus PP (up to 416.6666666....PP)
- You don't lose PP if you don't overwrite your previous score with a one that gives you less PP
- You will lose ranks if others gain PP faster than you do (this should be obvious one, but for some people it isn't)

In terms of skill:
- Playing lot of different maps makes you into generalist
- Playing selectively certain types of maps makes you into specialist
- Imo both are viable options but what I've observed is that specialists tend to gain ranks faster and generalists gain ranks bit by bit over longer period of time

Some of my opinions:
- You shouldn't really care about PP and play what you want to play
- If you want to dedicate yourself to improving yourself:
1. Know what you can and can't do atm.
2. Set yourself a goal which you know you can achieve.
3. Work towards the goal with an approach you find most suitable for yourself
4. Repeat steps 1-3

Yes & No. Playing more maps will generally expose you to more patterns and will improve consistency. That being said it only is helpful if the maps are within a suitable skill range. Downloading and playing a bunch of super easy maps won't help you improve, nor will playing maps well beyond your skill level with No Fail turned on and you aren't reading the map but just flailing the cursor around and spamming the keyboard.

If you want to improve ultimately the best way is to just constantly try and play stuff just a bit harder than your comfort zone. This can mean multiple things other just higher SR. If you find it difficult but not so difficult that it's not understandable it's a good zone to be in.

I disagree with this one.
They also help you improve, but the improvement process is lot slower and most people who try to improve by this method get bored or burnout and it's not recommended approach by any means. But there are people who can improve by using this method.

I disagree with your disagree, playing maps too easy for you will make you hit a wall since you don't challenge your weaknesses, and playing maps too hard will cause you to learn improperly and disproportionately, which some players may grow from it but most won't.
(You need make goals for yourself while playing.)

I don't see you really disagreeing with me.

Yes if you only play maps that are too easy. Skills like reading, aiming, stamina, accuracy won't improve. But you can improve intuition and focus which are not necessarily "skills" and they're really hard to evaluate in terms of improvement.

I see two problems with trying to learn by playing maps too hard:
1. Learning curve is like a cliff covered in spikes on fire.
2. When people try to analyze their weaknesses and strengths based on their scores on too hard maps they are more prone to make mistakes.

Yes, improving with maps too easy or too hard does require certain type of mindset and it doesn't suit most people.
And there are more efficient ways of improvement.

But worst thing player can do is confine themselves by thought of "I shouldn't be playing this it's waste of my time and won't help me improve"

Sorry if this seems bit disoriented but it's kind of hard to write this while my thoughts go lot faster than I can type and I have to translate them.
Being high on meds doesn't help either.

The best way of improving is not playing at all.

You're corrupting yourself a bit, not only are you not improving, but since your not constantly trying to improve yourself, you're gonna get lazy and learn bad mental habits. You might have to take a break and reset your sloppy muscle memory. It's like how the first month of going to the gym is more important than the second. Basically you're breaking momentum and might require a break if you do that, so I consider that NOT getting better even if you might get slightly more consistent at maps that are already too easy for you. Hitting a wall or going steps back from the ideal direction is definitely not getting better.

It seems that we have different way to approach things in general and arguing over this any further is pointless.
The person reading the posts should try to understand both ways of approaching things and think if either approach will be any use for them.

i have like 15k beatmaps and i suck.
like people around my rank usually play for 1-2 years with around 20k plays. i played for 5 years with 50k plays and my graph looks as flat as the lolis i watch (don't arrest me). you won't just get better by having more maps. you need 2 things:
#1 play more (=patience / experience)
#2 git gud (=talent)
and in rare ocassions it's the hardware.

but! you need a certain pool of maps to begin with. 500 isn't much. but if you already have 5k or 10k getting more maps won't help you imho.
Yuudachi-kun
I only had like 5k when I was rank 900 lmbo

According to my S A and B/C ranks in client maybe 1-2k played tops

No he said that you can potentially get more pp if you have more maps and become an overall well rounded player.

@OP The more maps you play the better your skillset will become. I am mostly playing for fun and I just FC 4* maps which results in me having a really well rounded skillset and if you do the same you have an easy time climbing the ladder and you get a really well rounded skillset too.

It is also more fun to be not limited to maps due to the lack of skill, some maps are unique and require a different skill you may not have yet, but it pays off and it's worth the effort.

Sometimes you may stumble upon a masterpiece that gives you the goosebumps and you may treat this game different from everyone else.

Retrying is not THAT bad, but if you don't know your limits you better avoid retrying.
I Give Up
Playing 1000 different maps is plenty already. It should take about 2 weeks to cycle through them, and if they are above your skill level it would take 20 cycles to fc most of them, and 100 cycles to fc the rest that actually test your mettle. That's a year's worth of progress.
markii
having a variety of maps is very important, as for the retry thing, it's more about the mental game, retrying a map dozens of times for an FC is tilting, and reinforces whatever mistake you've been making, but if you play a map, and miss the second note, or know you can do better, or really enjoy it don't be afraid to retry.

you can't lose PP in most cases, very ocasionally you can (usually intentional, though) for instance get a score on a map with HR, get PP, now get higher acc with HD, and because HD has the same score bonus, but a lower PP multiplier you can beat your HR play in score and lose PP (iirc they are or have already changed this though, but they've been talking about changing it for literally years)

playcount doesn't affect PP, except for bonus PP which is insignificant enough not to worry about, because the ammount of ranked scores required is more than a quick grind.

this is the part where I answer the OP title.
but to answer your question I have 60k beatmaps, and if I had to guess I can probably pass 75ish% pf em, and over half are so easy I'd probably never play them anyways, having challenging maps is important, and playing lots of new maps is important I have more beatmaps than playcount by a lot, and I've played some maps a couple hundred times, so I don't think I've even played all he maps I have

so 60k maps, 36k play count, rank 1.5k, but I'm gonna get 1.2k soon so I don't have to start putting "2k" in my stream titles.
