Every now and then I keep seeing random difficulties I've never seen before.

this would be an example. What's different from Nyu's Hard and plain hard? whats the EraseUs and EraseUs v2 difficulties?

Sorry im completely new here I started 3-4 days ago.

When there is a name, that is normally because it was mapped by someone other than the creator of the other maps. That is the way of giving credit besides writing their name into the description of the map. They will, of course, be slightly different difficulties since they are different maps.

Oh... That actually is pretty cool.

v2 is probably a remapped version of the original diff.

this is not the only map with v2 diffs https://osu.ppy.sh/s/14723

I think I should add that the mapper is giving the name of the difficulties. If I recall correctly osu! mappers copied the "Touhou" difficulty system: Easy, Normal, Hard, Lunatic/Insane.

Also bemani diffs like Another and Hyper, and sdvx diffs like Exhaust, Maximum, and Infinite. But most common for 5*+ maps have 'Extra' diff names.
