I like the shading on the girl's hair.
As for me, I haven't drawn anything recently since I spent most of my time in Photoshop.
I used to start copying pictures, then using them as references for fanart/original drawing, then I draw original stuff from what I remember in anatomy and whatnot.

As for a background, less is usually more. You could go for like trying to imitate a spellcard of her, but just the red subterranean sea will do fine.

Partly because I find it funny to think of her with a permanent armcannon while doing things like eating or trying to fit through a door frame or something, and partly because I think it looks silly unless she's attacking with it.
