AI-chan reporting another very spicy one (this is actually got ranked like WTF....)

https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/852901/discussion#/669017

Mappers have their own concept on how to reflect the song and also some very controversial topics on nomination. Massive wall of text and fiery arguments from the community spread out of the discussion room.

One also used A-L-I-E-N map as a baseline for the argument

spicy

but I argue flow is as subjective as the line they draw for definition. First definition would concern when you can no longer move the cursor in a smooth motion. The subjectivity mostly comes from the player's ability to maintain around the same velocity throughout the pattern (assuming they do that instead of snapping). Sharp angles can be said to have flow like star patterns and such, and first definition doesn't cover those. Second definition would concern the stress the player experience when trying to reach an aimpoint.

The level of subjectiveness differs from player to player and what skill level they actually attain. that could be the reason why others see it fine while others don't.

I think were on the same boat on this issue then.

oh my, the good old days LOL

if somebody was found nowadays ranking a map with inconsistency in timing between diffs, they'd get booted right away prob xD

https://osu.ppy.sh/forum/p/5666947 - mapper makes highest diff with extremely hard jacks in the ending. Drama ensues over tastes as the map gets rep from player rating. Drama resolves until bubble pop by QAT for keeping ending intact.
Aiseca
Recent events at the mapping scene brought up many people to question the system. Do you think with the current proposals here and there being put up to be discussed and have a "community-wide input" on how to make the system work well at both ends of the mapper and the higher-ups can finally be done at the start of a new chapter of mapping? Or is it another gust of wind just passing by and will be sent yet again to the depths without resolution?

"Community-wide" input is not wide enough. I am actively engaging those threads and mostly BN, mappers, and modders are responding. Huge polarization on how to deal with controversial maps. Some want a QAT dictatorship to firmly decide against "low quality" maps, whatever the subjective viewpoint is. Some proposed to let random QAT and BN vote what to per controversial maps. Some are complaining ranking criteria is too relaxed and is causing the mess with controversial maps. Others propose to have the players vote if the QAT can't decide.

Ultimately, peoples have tastes differ yet those who have specific tastes and want to restrict controversial maps are the most dangerous. I am not sure whether they are aware or not of it because they can be just unhappy with how a mapper got away pushing an experimental map they don't approve of, and think nothing about how thier ideals would play out on a wider spectrum. Fears about maps curated to certain tastes and such.

Added.

How much variation does there need to be for the map to be unenjoyable due to inconsistency? Likewise how much variation should be present in a map so that it's not boring due to repeatition?
Aiseca
Lol the drama blew up so quickly.
By the time of my report, it was just like 14 pending, now it's 54 (O_O!)

Based on my modding experience, I think inconsistency can be called if a similar rhythm was mapped in a completely different way than the previous [mostly occurring on full length songs] (ex* the rhythm was first mapped as sliders with sharp angles at the first kiai; then you mapped the same rhythm on the second half, but this time mapped as stacked sliderheads.)

Variation (according to some people) needs in order to make a section not look like a half-assed copy pasted section of the former mapped part. But also variation in a sense that it should maintain the core structure of the rhythm itself [like jumps, emphasis, movement, flow + other subjective s*it that was not known to most new mappers now described at wiki.]

People's perception of these seems to differ in weight in terms on how they judge a map whether it was inconsistent and or too much variation.

If a map should be mapped exactly the same; the map would suffer a lackluster quality.

If a map doesn't have that much of a visual variation; the map would suffer a lackluster appeal.

In the end mapping is really easy; ranking tho..... Lolz.

I found this to be somewhat entertaining:
A mod about timing in the song that made the mapper go clueless about the timing Gods' discussion. 😂

Diff spike argument; mapper finds it okay while the BNs and QAT don't.
P.S. Lasse's comment is funny :D

Yea there is a fine line to walk across when it comes to making patterns that allow the player feel the impact vs not making it so hard. That said, I don't know what kind of full screen jumos those are, but I have played plenty in older maps.

Full screen jumps is allowed I assume in a few conditions:

1 - if the jumps were supported by a very obvious big sounds in the music.

2 - if the screen jumps were present only in ultra diff still bearing the first condition stated.

3 - making sure that it is readable and not spamming it across the board..
-----------

My map actually uses a near cross screen 1/2 jump since it's ultra diff. I have to nerf the same thing in expert and lower diffs for compensation.

I am talking about full screen jumps in hard and insane. Usually at 1/2 meter at less than 160 bpm.

they shouldn't be exclusive to top tier diffs

Hmm... I'm sketchy about screen jumps on hard... It's absurd and creates a huge skill gap between it and lower diffs.

Insane tho is possible for jumps, but half screen to 1/3 is the most conservative I can think of..

Mapping style varies depending on how long the song.

Most insane diff upwards in TV Size maps has ridiculous spacing just to spike up the SR requirements even if it's not that needed really.

On the other hand, full length songs must nerf things down on the same diffs in order to compensate as "the lowest diff available in the map set".
Aiseca
A long argument about potential over map and forced 2B elements. Random passerby called the mod as a "try hard to DQ for subjective issues". The modder gave up on the mapper on explaining the problem, BNs responded and found the case to be valid and deemed unrankable.

it's best to change the thing before osu! kiddies start going mental about it, even if it's NSFW or not

Modder makes a mod about one slider, and then mapper replies with toxic response. It all snowballs from there.

A double whammy, what a bargain, added!

You can use the heat from these two to make more popcorn

I sometimes imagine what will happen if I apply every mod suggested on the map and at the very end restore the unmodded diff and make the modded an additional difficulty.

Holy shit, I can't believe there's that much discussion about a map's bg that is a classical art piece with nudity in it.

Rhythm introduction seems like overmapped; modder told the mapper that the intro is way harder than the latter part because of confusing spacing usage and other stuff:
