So I having an assignment for my english class on culture. He said we could talk about whatever culture we want. So I decided that I could compile together quotes, testimonies, and recounts of players of the osu! community. I would love to hear from you guys on what you think about this!

Some questions you could answer:

1. How would you describe the culture of the community surrounding osu! ?

2. Are there certain aspects of this game or community that have impacts on your own culture?

3. Would you say that there are any subcultures within this community?

4. Has osu! had an impact on you personally? If so, how?

5. Would you consider the culture of this community to be Folk (isolated, centered within a certain community e.q. Amish) or Pop (popular or fast growing, modern society centered e.q. Marvel)?

So those are just some suggested questions, but you can pretty much say anything you want! Tell stories, have discussions, etc . I would love to hear from everybody, from rank 1,000,000 to top 10! Thank you guys!

I'd say it's in the middle. This game is heard of in the anime/otaku community but it's not so well known anywhere else. It's not mainstream, but it's not exactly niche either. If your assignment doesn't allow you to answer "in between", I'd say this is more Folk. Anime itself is somewhat niche so Osu! being popular in the otaku community still makes it more "underground". If that makes any sense at all.

Usually when you log on to the forums, you start to see the same people that tend to visit the same places. FG and OT being an example. But I've never really went anywhere else outside of these two subforums so my observation might be redundant.

1. How would you describe the culture of the community surrounding osu! ? It used to be a videogame culture but became over the years more in the direction of the otaku culture. Nevertheless it has nothing specific, the impact anime, etc. has is mostly because of the offer of ranked beatmaps we have. Anyways, today osu! is well-known to "otakus" (I really hate to call people like that).

3. Would you say that there are any subcultures within this community? Like said, the probably strongest is the culture of anime, following of videogame fans. Since osu! has active users of nearly every country worldwide there are a lot of topics discussed but the two cases above are filling 85% of the conversations in osu!.

4. Has osu! had an impact on you personally? If so, how? Since I moderate osu! for three years (soon four) and being in osu! since almost seven years it became part of my daily life: I wake up, check my mails and go in the forum if there is something new. :P I am sure osu! is and was formative for my personality but just shallow, not that it changed me completely.

5. Would you consider the culture of this community to be Folk (isolated, centered within a certain community e.q. Amish) or Pop (popular or fast growing, modern society centered e.q. Marvel)? I can't do much with the examples you gave.. but if I have to decide I think it will be the second, osu! constantely grows and so the audience becomes bigger. How big osu! will become in the next years and what size it will take till the end is unknown but I am excited. :P
Hopefully this helps somehow.

The osu! culture is surrounded with many anime culture, mostly because there are a lot of anime songs that have been turned into beatmaps.
80% of the players here uses an anime profile picture, whether it's Ironically or Non-ironically.

osu! has impacted my life by a bit. Because of osu!, i came to love other rhythm games, and also, because of osu!, i came to meet some really interesting people on the game.
