Even back when I played seriously I always considered adjusting to different storyboards/skins as a skill to be mastered, just like any other playing techniques. I enjoyed the challenge of the heart approach circles in ztrot's Love Shine and I eventually got used to it. Though in cases where the skins/SB/color selections made it too annoying to play, I simply deleted the map and moved on (can't think of any specific examples since I don't remember the maps that I delete )
I've always thought deleting those elements was a cheap way of getting a high score, and I'm actually pretty surprised that I'm the minority here.
As a disclaimer though I WILL say that I don't play 95% of the japanese/anime stuff out there, so I may be oblivious to exactly how bad some of these skins/storyboards actually are.
