I have heard people say that it's not possible to lose pp. I did believe it until I saw myself lose pp after playing a map. Does anyone actually know why I lost pp? Is it error in the pp calculation algorithm or something?

The play used to calculate pp is the highest score.
Some plays are worth less pp even though they have a higher score.
Its usually nothing to worry about as the losses are mostly small but there are some freak cases when mods are involved.

I think I've only lost pp once and it was a very small amount, lol.
I recently overwrote one of my top scores and lost over 30pp. Maybe it doesn't seem much but it hurts.

the most common ways this happens are by:
- beating a high accuracy nomod play with HD and getting significantly worse accuracy
- beating a HR FC with HD and higher accuracy (if you can do both just use HDHR)
- getting a higher score (barely) but significantly worse accuracy + more misses at the end
the solution to all of these is just get a better play on the map to get your pp back. in the time you complain about losing pp, you could be playing the map again or playing a different map to get it back. c:
