I honestly thought this would be an OK map until I checked out the mods and you said the following

Look at MiddleIsland - Roze mapped by Lan wings, the patterns are obviously copy and pasted, but the spacing choices, the flow, the brokenness of everything could really show how sadness can be expressive and gentle both through repetitiveness; THIS is how you get an emotional response from the player. It is to actively challenge their interpretation for the song your mapping while making it playable. Look at Nhato - Miss You mapped by HanzeR, again obviously copy and pasted and repetitive, but it portrayed sinking feeling that this loneliness will never go away no matter how hard we try to reach the person we want to be with, as it has this constant back and forth flow that goes no where, paired with constant momentum changes.

There's honestly so many way you could've represent suffering and loneliness, but I disagree mapping it like many other hexagrid maps out there, there's very little difference to be drawn from your map and those hexagrid maps.

so in conclusion your map is objectively ok so there's really no reason to dq it, also even if I try you would've just said it is up to interpretation and give yourself a pat on the back. But I really have to say is that this map has really low replayability since in all honesty, a pretty normal and simple map that many mappers out there can do the same, and rank it without saying "it's supposed to have a deeper meaning".

Placement is pretty good honestly. It's similar to my mapping style, but there are still some obvious differences, especially in how you treat circle > slider. Stuff like this:
Also you seem a lot more lenient towards overlaps, which is something I would always stray away from: 01:26:674 (2,3,4,5) - 00:20:424 (1,2,3,4,5) -

Some things to consider in the future though, your verse sections are really dull because you stick to 1.00x DS for so much of the section. There are almost no emphatic uses of jumps, and using 1.00x DS does reduce the amount of interesting patterns you can use. There's a disparity between verse sections and kiai sections as a result, its definitely something to consider on future maps.

I do have to say though, 00:27:567 (1,3) - and 00:45:334 (1) - those repeats are really hard to see...
And the streams on 04:07:567 (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) - sound really overmapped because the drum roll stops after 04:07:566 - xP Or fades to the point where it's really hard to hear. If you believe there is still a soft drum roll there, a change of spacing could really help distinguish it from earlier sections.


The rhythms you used were really similar to my map haha. But in terms of placement yea, I think theres a good amount of differences. The map that most accurately copies my mapping style is still probably: https://osu.ppy.sh/s/221954

I find it funny that you point that out, because I have a completely different issue with this: Comparing the first verse with the section prior to it, 00:13:281 -, there is basically zero difference between these sections as they use the same SV, spacing and rhythm-density (except for the occasional triplets) - I quickly pointed that out to Yukiyo a few days ago, and he reasoned it with (summarized) "since the music is different, it already creates a different feeling when playing so there's no need to map it differently" - which I wholeheartedly disagree. This completely ignores the song, if you think that's a valid reason then you could even justify a map that is 100% the same throughout the whole song with it. So idk about Monstrata thinking that it's dull but imo it's completely overdone when compared to the section prior to it, but even without comparing it, the rhythm density just feels extremely forced - The rhythms here seem to focus on nothing particular at all except monotonous 1/1-rhythms, even when a prominent layer has offbeat-rhythms for a bit, and even overmapping many notes where not even the extremely insignificant 'percussion'-thingy has notes.. I'd like to hear some more opinions on this lol, Lasse responded to me mentioning that with 'but it's not bad for a first map' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

for the record, I do think that this map is generally well-made, it's just this one major aspect that destroys it all for me

also who the hell cares if this map reminds you of Monstrata's style, there's thousands of maps out there that have the exact same styles xd

Well, I guess you could say you all are begging for remaps, at least that's what I am getting from yours.
I mean this is my first attempt going for rank and I am happy that I actually made it into the qualified phase of it.
But all I am getting from your comments is "this is shit" now I might be simpleminded here but well I don't know what to do.

It seems like having good maps is so important to the mapping community and thus they are actually hindering noob mapper, like me to have access to such "great success", I guess you could say. Did we ever say "your map is shit" ? I'm sorry but I don't see that, your map is pretty good tbh for a first rank! I'm not telling anything about that because when I start ranking I copied monstrata so everybody has to start somewhere.
But you can't react like that when poeple are trying to help you out.

And you know when I'm talking about when I said "WHY U DO DIS" like monstrata said is cleary, there's no reason to map a stream here, since there's no drum sound, it's a bit stupid gameplay wise.

Also the fact that "i quit mapping now" is a not a good behaviour, since you worked hard to make this map what it is actually. So please listen and read to what poeple say to you instead of closing your mind.

I was just highlighting differences between your map, and my general mapping style. Only the stuff below --- is actually relevant towards quality improvement imo. The 1.00x DS thing is to a degree a style choice too.

Take things easily, you will get this into the qualified section again sooner than you expect.

Then suggest you to use reasons other than "it was my intention" to the few modders that actually pointed out the issue with the map. It's the quality of the map that people are concerned with, people already think your map is good, it's just that you kinda ignore previous modder's concern which lead to it being DQed now, look at them again and you might find something, I don't even need to give feedback, the feedback was there all along.

01:02:567 (3) - That finish on tail seems pretty random. Whistle sounds way better. Same for 01:11:138 (4) - 's repeat. As I said before it is audible in the song so I just translated it over to the histounds ^^"
01:26:674 (2,5) - Overlap is visual in-game, nothing major though. Yes, it might be but I haven't seen any players complain yet or well I do think it will not be noticeable to players... also I do not know how how to fix this actually do you have any suggestions? I want to keep the triple and blanket if possible it fits just so well~
01:27:567 - On this section in particular, you could've started increasing the spacing a little bit. Using the same distance as the previous rhythm isn't the best idea.I see your point and I partly agree though I would have to remap the near whole map to these and other DS realted problems
01:46:335 (4) - If you are going for the flow-break on 01:46:516 (5,6) - , try to NC this one so it's predictable you will make a different pattern maybe? I think I fixed the not intended flow break
02:23:995 (1,2) - Distance between these objects could be reduced, music doesn't support such a jump. hmm I don't get your point here~ I hear two strong drums followed by a triple which for me needs this emphasis
02:43:995 (7,8,9,1) - Literally the only 1/2 stacked notes in the entire map? I think... :( As explained before they are rare but they aren't alone
03:44:710 (1,2) - 03:45:245 (1,2) - Going for the anti-jumps here doesn't seem like a good idea, it ruins the momentum completely. I hope I could fix it and create some consitency
03:55:245 - Slightly offbeat. More timing checks are coming
03:58:638 (2,3) - Stacking the objects completely blends the guitar sound in the bgm. Consider splitting them! I don't want to. Plitting them would make it feel weird imo
04:10:424 (1) - Offbeat too here. as above
04:41:495 (10,1) - You could've emphasised them a bit more, to be fair. The sound is pretty different from everything else previously, starting a build-up instead of keeping the DS might be a better idea. yesh
The jumps at the very beginning, even if they are "well mapped", seem like you planned to raised the SR a little bit.

To be fair, the map is actually well done, but there are some things that worry me a lot. Especially the fact that you are using a complete different spacing from everything else. The concept you pulled for the creation of this beatmap is... good. You wanna know the real problem? The difficulty spikes the map itself has. Everything else plays like a Hard-level type of difficulty. You could adjust that to balance things out, fairly speaking. Personally, I think you could work on this set a little bit. Adjusting the things I mentioned above is a good start!

just adding my 2 cents on 00:27:567 (1,3) - 00:44:710 (1,3) - : hiding repeat arrows kind of is unrankable lol. the reason for that is that hiding them makes the slider misleading/ambiguous (oh look it's just a normal slider... oh). and while this isn't completely "hiding" its arrow it can make the entire thing way harder to notice. Since you have a ton of space for alternatives that would just simply display the repeat arrow, why not have it fully visible?

I agree with Lasse here, I playtested it multiple times, and never had issues with the repeat arrows, specially because that part is slow enough, giving players enough time to readjust to the new slider. However fixing those should be something easy to do in case the author decided to apply a fix.

So, I've checked the map with Kalibe, there's some issue of flow, emphasize and minor stuff that you can/want to fix so the map will have a better quality. No need to remap tho, remapping might need more time and ideas imo.
  1. 00:13:281 (1,2,3) - First of all, Yeah i know you are a new mapper, Im not going to be harsh with you but if you want. You could probably make the pattern line from 1>2>3 looks "precisely straight".
  2. 00:15:781 (5,1) - I know that you can do a emphasize here for the Strong piano sound. The efficient/fastest way to solve here you could ctrl+g 00:15:781 (5) - so there'll be a jump to (1). Yeah i know its not big but a small jump would work too for emphasize. But maybe, if you ctrl+g 00:14:620 (5,1,3) - how this plays. It would make 00:15:781 (5) - have a consistent playability if you understand what i mean.
  3. 00:20:781 (2,4) - Kalibe said, you could've Stack these notes for a better playability and to Avoid unnecessary overlaps with 00:20:960 (3,5) -. And i Agree with his opinion, Just've tested and it'll plays cooler but completely up to you :oops:
  4. 00:21:495 (5,1) - A little emphasize stuff xd but kinda hard to fix this so leaving it up like this should still be fine However, its still your choice whether you want to fix it or not.
  5. 00:28:102 (2,3) - I think others have pointed this out that the repeat kinda hidden with 00:27:567 (1) - 's sliderbody which could make ppl's misread it.
  6. 00:38:995 (1,3) - you could blanket (3) with (1)'s edge imo :P
  7. 00:43:281 (1) - Forgot to NC here? it went to 10 combos lol but hmm i think you did NC'ing every 2 Measures or NC'ing only in new Vocal/Strong synth. Its completely up to you whether to add NC or not but i think NC'ing would be better.

  9. 01:21:852 (1,2) - Kalibe has pointed this too, Flow seems weird and i also agrees, You could pick one of these 2 stuff for a better flow here imo.
  10. 01:26:674 (2,3,4) - I think the stacking like this seems unnecessary imo. Why dont you do automatic stack instead?
  11. 01:35:067 (3,5) - You are completely placing these objects wrong, It makes the hexagon didnt look neat and different than other hexagons you've made. Here, try moving (3) to 300|33 and (5) to 219|62 placement and see if it looks better than the current one. The other objects after these (ex : 01:35:602 (6,8) - etc).... I hope you know what to do with them.
  12. 02:12:031 (1,2,3) - Kalibe has pointed this. I think the spacing here is too big for emphasizing the Vocals. Maybe reduce them a bit would'nt hurt anything.

  18. 04:08:995 (1) - Ah Kalibe founds something weird here, try playback the song on 25% and Snap the reverse on 1/8 to see if 1/8 snap fits correctly there.

  20. 05:14:729 (1,2,1,2,3,4) - The spacing of 05:15:444 (3,4) - seems too large for me, try reducing it a bit since the sound isn't Very strong. Also, 05:14:729 (1,2,1) - Triangle problem here, stacks caused the triangle went inconsistent. 05:15:265 (1,2,3) - Try moving this to 195|309. It'll make the triangle looks neater than before
  21. 05:10:066 (5) - Last thing from Kalibe, Its weird you only do 1/2 slider here when there's also a vocal on the 1/4. Might be better if you transfrom 5 to a 1/4 kickslider and add one more here 05:10:245 - The idea is cuz kicks hit on the vocal pitch which is very cool.
  22. 05:22:380 (2,3,4,5,6,1,2,3) - Hexagon didnt have equal spacing but i guess you intended to make it like that...
  23. 05:24:368 (7,8) - Spacing here, maybe stacking 05:24:548 (8) - under 05:23:825 (4) - would be much better imo. Yeah its reduced lol.

    Okay that should be all! Generally the map is fine, yes. But the structure didnt look better than people would taught. There's some parts that has different hexagon spacing, un-equal triangle spacing which is Very inconsistent. But its a natural thing for New Mappers, Just take that in mind if you want a better Quality map :) Anyways, didn't pointed out nazi things cuz you know what to do. And about emphasize, Please do it mostly on Strong vocal/downbeat.

can we take a step back and realise this is yukiyo's first rank? we should allow some leniency in the standards otherwise new mappers would be completely locked out of the community.

yes, there are some issues that need to be addressed such as the reverse arrows and the controversial streams, but subjective discussions on how different sections play in contrast or the emphasis in patterns should take into consideration that the mapper is new.

no offense, but it's not like people expect something amazing out of a new mapper. people gain an incentive to constantly improve quality after ranking their first map as it gives them confidence in their ability. shutting mappers down in the early stages of their career by flooding them with suggestions that have vague solutions really isn't healthy for this game.

i hope we can approach this differently by providing viable solutions to things you may have concerns for so that we can achieve that middle ground where everyone is satisfied c:

This is the perfect time to address all these issues, there are quite a few experienced eyes on this and all the scrutiny will improve Yukiyo's future maps.

The fact that a mapper has zero ranked maps should not change the way you look at a map entirely. If you eliminate discussion they may never improve or develop their own style. As a modder you should be judging the map against itself and against what it's trying to accomplish, thats all I see in this thread.

Shouldn't you consider this more of a learning experience for Yukiyo? Mappers learn a lot from a DQ. A lot of what has been suggested helps playability or map coherence which individual players do care about when playing the game. What they do not care about is who mapped the map. A player finding a clunky or awkward pattern will just complain about the pattern, they likely won't be giving lenience to Yukiyo because its their first ranked map.

Haruto's mod was quite nice as it provided examples with the mods - but everything I see in this thread has the intention of helping the mapper grow. I believe that if Yukiyo were to reconsider some of the previous denied post-DQ mods, a middle ground would be achieved where most are happy.

Timing definitely needs an overhaul though I'd say the same thing about monstrata's ranked set too but that slipped by :? :? :? . To add to the list:

01:24:352 (8) - timing is quite off on this note and the section it occurs in. If you even just listen to the hitsound on the end of this slider you'll hear two consecutive drumbeats, one being the hitsound and one being the drums in the music.



Based on the precedents set by previous ranked map (namely like monstratas first 30 or so ranked maps :? :? :? ) I don't really see anything majorly unrankable from a quality standpoint.


I do kind of hate the way you mapped this for the same reason I hate most of monstratas maps. It seems like it would be kind of common sense but, when nothing is emphasized nothing is emphasized. Outside of mapping the linear buildups this style of mapping all but ignores anything expressive happening in the music. From my viewpoint mapping something as expressive as this song in such a rigid mapping style is the same as chaining someone to a wall in some dark musky rat infested cellar and leaving them to die.


That's 100% an opinion though and this style of mapping is regularly accepted nowadays though so I'm not going to tell you to remap. Considering that Hanzer's wonderful world got dq'd over timing issues and he now has to rank it with like 100x more red lines than the other two ranked sets for it have I do think you are going to have to actually fix the timing on this if you want it ranked though.
