it'd be fun to actually have some interesting matches determined by ability to play the game overall, heh

Hello,

It's understandable (and also to be expected) that there will be a portion of players that prefer ln's in their map selection, but please keep in mind that there are also those that do not enjoy ln's in the slightest including the SL staff (unless they are done correctly), and those that refuse to say so in public to avoid any conflicts which is okay. STAR LEAGUE is not something that will determine a players ln ability because there will not be maps heavy in that category, and unfortunately that is something that wont change. Although, also keep in the mind that the FAQ mentioned ln's will be limited, not absolutely removed. For example:

You can tell which map that is from the image. That does not mean it is in the pool, but that is something we find acceptable in terms of structure.

This on the other hand

is not something that will be considered for the pool.
In short, yes, you will be seeing some LN's, but it is not our priority to fit them into every single inch of the pool.

It should also be mentioned that this
although for some is acceptable, we are against it for many different reasons and will not put it into consideration for the pool.
Will the pool have less diversity because it is limiting LN's and removing SV's? To an extent, yes, considering you are removing an entire skillset from a game that encourages it, but at the same time sv's and ln's are not required in order to test a players capability in a variety of categories. It is simply diverting the attention towards specific categories and away from those that the staff wants to avoid. This could also create frustration with some players because it is essentially stripping some people away of a skillset that they might be so good in, it could push them to the top, and it is very clear on who those people are, which is fine, but from Star League 1, it has not been our priority to create equality between every skillset that exists regardless of how large scale an event becomes. That is the MWC's job as an "official" event. As mentioned before, it is all for fun, and the competition/prize that comes with it is a bonus. If LN's are fun for some, then I apologize on my behalf, but if you are expecting an LN heavy structure, then the maps that will be available will most likely be a disappointment.

As a side update, for those that have yet to receive an invite, expect wave 2 to be possibly larger than wave 1. Update 6 will be on August 19th.

So, as a player who finds LNs/SVs fun I am not joining this time. Good luck to those who will!

But honestly, I think you should told us earlier about that :P

Your idea of what is and isn't acceptable for long notes should not be getting in the way of map selection for the tournament. You're literally alienating groups of players who have that as a very viable skillset as a part of a game that occasionally emphasizes it.

No one is saying make every single map a long note map -- you should have mappools that are actually balanced and don't just cater to players who are only good at one aspect of the game; a reminder to you that osu!mania has release timing as a functional game mechanic that gets utilized in very close to 100% of maps that are ranked, and the amount of them dictate chart difficulty much like the amount of other skillsets assist in dictating chart difficulty as well. You're setting up a terrible tournament precedent by catering to certain skillsets and not others.

You're also setting yourself up for the tournament to be hyper-predictable as time goes on, because you're not providing multiple areas for players to pick through in mappools. By providing more skillsets to test in a mappool, you're forcing players to learn other skillsets they don't have. By including maps that test multiple skillsets, you're creating numerous high-risk picks that force players to bite the bullet on a skillset they might not be the best at in hopes that their strength helps them edge out against one another's strengths.

This tournament has the potential to be interesting for everyone involved, but by removing a large part of the game that players have as their specialization, you might as well not even bother inviting all of these players -- a huge majority of the matches are just going to be boring sweeps.

We apologize, but putting LN focused maps into the pool is just not something that can change. We have statistically received more positive feedback from sm oriented pools than those that contained LN's in the past, but more importantly, it is a decision from the staff on a personal standpoint that they, aside from not finding ln's enjoyable, also do not agree with the idea of forcing people to learn this specific skillset. Although, that is not to say that you won't be seeing ln's, just not in a sense where you can call something "ln heavy". You can be assured that the pools will require you to have many different skills, especially as you advance into the later stages, but ln's won't be as existent in this event. It is the responsibility of the MWC to satisfy all skill criterias, but by entering this event you are agreeing to join a competitive community tournament where the same rules do not apply.

If anyone would like to talk about this even though the decision can not be adjusted, or if you would like to cancel your registration, please let me know through PM and as always, the player list will stay up to date. 1/3rd of the invitations have been completed and about one month is left until the first round matches, so there is still quite a while to go and a lot of time to think about it.

Might as well give the money to the winners already tho.

The problem I see here is that it aims to be a "professional-ish" tournament by setting price pools, doing private invitations, with IDs and stuff that is not really frequent. So my opinion is that you should also stay as professional as possible when it comes to the map pool selection instead that just giving more chances to your favourite players. We dont even know who is the staff either!

Last year I didnt have the best of the experiences here playing this star league tournament because different reasons but now with all this stuff you are pmuch loosing all those ones who actually enjoyed it imo.

If you wanted to do a tournament like this, so "stepmania oriented" why you didnt host it in stepmania? I literally dont know if thats possible but I am psure you can setup something like that if you already managed to make such a thing here with IDs, invitations, streams whatever.

i think the most frustrating thing about this too, is that even with all of these issues, i don't want to leave the tournament because:

a.) the size of the field is somewhat appealing, though to be fair it's also a detriment because a good majority of the field is likely not going to stand much of a chance against the front-runners when the maps don't have any sort of holes to poke through weaknesses - i can see myself passing through a huge majority of the field with almost no effort (and that is absolutely not intended to be offensive to players at all as much as it is a point to further emphasize that mappool differentiation aids in giving players an actual fighting shot rather than making them hopelessly enter something where they'll get the broom)

b.) the lack of tournaments in mania as a whole makes it hard to want to pass this up: the size of this tournament gives players the opportunity to meet a ton of new players which is hugely appealing

c.) the odds of seeing another 1 v 1 tournament like this are going to be incredibly low and despite me really strongly disliking the premise of things here, there are a few showdowns in here that i desperately want to experience, and many more that could be amazing with tweaks

d.) this tournament is streamed, which means players at least get attention for their effort

there's a lot of good for this tournament but it's so hard to look at it as good when it's being overshadowed by such a stupid decision. it's pretty apparent you're doing something wrong, considering:

oh cool let's completely eliminate completely valid skillsets in an invitational tournament

rip anyone who's good at long notes because hey, that doesn't matter in a game that actually has release timing, right

EDIT: and before anyone uses this against me, SV maps deserve their fair share as well but they're certainly not as integral of a concept compared to LN which exists to some extent in nearly every map
people are clearly not liking your decision, and those who actually -do- like it won't be able to objectively justify why they don't because it comes down to preference (and if they do, their argument is likely not even confounded/close to being legitimate), whereas those who are not liking your decision are basing it off of your objective mention that you refuse to add any sort of emphasis to a part of the game that actually separates osu!mania and makes it something different/challenging.

this isn't a situation where people can just "leave the tournament" because the odds of a 4K tournament coming up again are contingent on whether or not someone wants to host it

i sure as hell won't be running another SOFT, most other tournaments are country-specific (which is why this affects me as well because there's hardly ever any US tournaments to begin with), and others are team-based which adds elements of scheduling and situations where odds of winning are also contingent on other uncontrollable circumstances

Update (PLEASE READ): All wave 2 invites will be sent in about 12 hours from now. We have also made an adjustment to the invite list and have reduced the amount of people that will be receiving an ID. Although there is no player limit ( which means you can register as long as you have an ID), we had to modify the invite list in a way that will keep the quality and scheduling of this event. We underestimated the amount of feedback we have received from the invitations and expected there to be far fewer registrations by this specific date. Due to removing a noticeable portion of players from receiving an invite, if you do not get one and feel as if you should have, please let us know through PM and we will check to see if you were part of the list that had to be removed and will make you a priority to have you in the tournament as soon as possible.

Does this mean anything for you if you are already registered or have an invite in your inbox? No. We mentioned in the past that there will be no player limit so the staff will be sticking to that. This change only applies to those that have yet to receive an invitation/ID.

@DikaSangga:

Update: Wave 2 invitations will be sent out shortly. It is getting to the point where things will now begin to slow down due to the cutoffs that had to be made to the invite list. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please let us know through PM.
