All things vocaloid here!

Vocaloids sound pretty bad in most practical situations and I wish artists would just use real vocalists instead. The artificial and restricted sound is very apparent and undesirable to me in songs that I otherwise enjoy, such as Magnet and Rolling Girl.

That said, I do like a frankly unusual amount of songs that make use of the software regardless of how limited it is. However, the idea that artists use Vocaloid just for publicity and attention from the otaku crowd makes me a bit sad; would their songs be just as popular if they weren't associated with the subculture? It feels like such a letdown with that way of thinking.

With the exception of Megpoid Gumi, I find most vocaloid's voices a tad annoying. >.<

With enough post-processing (I hope it's the right word) they are able to do wonders.
Songs that you don't like are probably the ones which were made by people with not enough time, skill or patience.
Same with mapping in osu!, drawing a picture or building a house.

I have yet to find a Vocaloid song that can replicate the natural tone of a singer for what it's worth. I don't believe it's possible with the software.

Pretty much just this. Maybe someday soon there'll be software that sounds much more realistic.

Listen to the Miku's tones in this, it's just amazing, with the tought on that she is virtual. To be honest, this is some of the best of Hatsune Miku I have heard so far, in the view of replicate a humans tone up tone down.
Ignore Gapku or whatever his name is :P

Except it still sounds totally robotic and void of emotion. The software is not capable of really producing a human sound, but then again, that's not the point of it, and those who try tend to fail rather miserably.
Danzai_old
As I said, this sounds humanlike, in that sense on how humanlike the program can be. Not that this is autentich to a human voice.
But all this aside, this song is pretty well made~

In addition to that, it seems to work best in situations where you would probably use a vocoder or other effects in the first place. Well, that would probably just be seen as common sense, but it's something worth noting, surely! Is this what you think the intended purpose of the software is? Is it aimed more at the independant community that doesn't have the resources to use anything else or is it just a fun novelty for musicians?

What about it sounds human-like? No emotion is conveyed, and the pitch changes tend to sound exceptionally artificial. Everything about it screams artificial.

A little bit from column A, a little bit from column B. It's not bad if you don't have vocals (due to independent development) but like another point you stated, it only really "works" in situations where vocoders are typically used. I also mostly find Vocaloid to be a niche sort of gimmick, something I'd rather only use as an effect if I ever do some sort of electronica.

Firstly, the Vocaloid Software was created to sing for backup singers, who didn't have that much emphasis in the songs and therefore didn't had to sound as realistic.
Right now, the vocaloid software it's usedfor either: What you mentioned, people who are musicians but can't afford a singer; songs that sounds better with a robotic tune (pretty much the best example would be the "livetune" album), because if they had a real singer they'd probably autotune him/her to death; or people who do can afford a singer but it rathers use a vocaloid for mianstream.

Also, there are some of us who do like the voicebanks and how are they used, even if they don't sound as realistic or don't express any emotion or bla bla bla :P (I actually don't agree with the emotion one but that's something i can detect and other people just can't, so I won't get into it), and some of us don't give a shit about the mainstream. I can say honestly that I have vocaloid songs on my iPod, and I listen to them in my way to uni, when I'm walking, when I'm traveling, etc., just like every other artist that I have in my iPod.

What I like the most about the vocaloid software is the creative process that's behind most songs. People gather around NicoNico, someone has a good idea for a song and shows the music, someone then does the lyrics and someone sinthetizes them, then the song is released and artists make the Video. It's a whole group of people who doesn't know each other working together for the sake of creating a nice musical piece.
Of course some of the most known artists don't need to go through this, but it's still very nice and intresting ^^

I end my post with 2 questions. What are your favorite 3 vocaloids? and favorite 3 composers?
Mine would be GUMI, MEIKO and Len, and composers would probably be Ryo, DECO*27 and Kz, with OSTER Project being a veeeery close 4th

EDIT: Quote from ryo
Singing voices did not have appeal as sound sources until now. But if voices can be used, they open up great oportunities. The vocaloid can sing your lyrics. You can write and create your own songs and further pursue your originality. Everybody is a songwriter

You know, collaborations like this are exceptionally common outside of niconico and the vocaloid context. I find it funny that you'd make a point of mentioning this, actually.

So it's unoriginal if I like something that vocaloid music has in common with other general music? I don't plan on deralining this thread more onto what I think, but I find funny that you think it's funny that I mentioned that.

Unoriginal? What. I don't understand. That's not what I meant to bring a point about mentioning!
Lanttu
I actually don't mind the computer-like voices, they can sound pretty interesting , too, when used in right way~

If we're talking about voices only and excluding everything fandom-related, I'm not sure at all, I kind of like them all at the same level. But if I really have to choose, I'll go with Gakupo, Solid append-Miku and Kaito, I guess. Once again, it really depends on who is using the program and how it is being used, since it can change the voice very much~ Sadly, though Gakupo is my favourite, there's only a few songs where he sounds good. >:

If fandom-related stuff is included, I like the aisu-loving Kaito-nii the most<3

Composers, DATEKEN is my absolute favourite. AVtechNO gets the second place, and though I usually enjoy only everything pink and cute and rainbow-colored and fuwa fuwa, I have to say that utsu-P is becoming one of my favourites also, heh~ Also, lately I've gotten really interested in Shinjou-P, he has made some awesome Kaito songs. :3

What's with people saying that GUMI's voice is superior to the rest? They can all be good and they can all be annoying depending on how they're used.

GUMI's voice is a fair bit less shrill than, say, Miku and can sound more realistic and natural overall from what I've heard. A good example of this is the song Miracle-Gumiracle.
Powerdrone
KAITO

Sleep Powder
Personally, Kaito isn't my favorite Vocaloid (or at least all the songs I've heard with him in it).
Unless you have a decent song to provide to say so.
Firo Prochainezo
Kaito is just there for the BL lovers.

When you consider that he originally had a vibe for being a cushion for Miku, this result is hilarious.
Galkan
Speaking of the most realistic-like voices, I'd choose Luka Megurine in some of her songs ("World Reflection" and "Suffocation", for example) I really like how she sounds out there.

Use your real voice and try it, you'll feel weird.
Apex_old
Lol, it'd be Kagene DAKU(影音ダク) if I tried(With a costume like Hank from Madness).

Speaking of vocaloid covers, I found this one of Magnet hilarious XD (song starts at around 1:28)

I remember that :D

Not such a big fan of Vocaloid, but some of the songs are actually pretty good.

Top 3 Vocaloids would probably be perhaps Kagamine Len, Kagamine Rin and Gumi in terms of sound. But if you add in other variables, perhaps I would have to stuff Gakupo in somewhere. [orz]

As for Top 3 producers, definitely Wowaka, Ryo and the last one I can't really decide, perhaps Iroha-P?
Ruisu-kun_old
I like vocaloid, specially Luka <3 I love her.
Martinawa
Only one word in my head now:

MIKU <3

I love her. But the other vocaloid characters (Except KAITO) are cool too 8-)
Linco
BURN MIKU D:
I'm a Kaito fangirl <3 oh, and Gumi is nice, too. Although her voice sounds fail if you can't use Vocaloid right.. if you can, it's love.
That Vocaloid-producing company said that Vocaloid 3 is really more realistic and stuff like that, so let's wait.
Firo Prochainezo
Miku is mainstream. Some love for the English VOCALOIDs.

I love Lily voice, and my other favorites are Luka, Gumi and Rin.
