I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but exactly why are hold sliders now unrankable? I've seen many cases where they're fun to play and add quality to the beatmap. D:

Because peppy said so.

Pretty much this.

You are allowed though to use slider speeds in the same way as I did in ZUN - U.N. Owen Was Her? so you can't say it's not allowed at all, just not the old way that's allowed.

No. Halving the BPM there is only for slider speed reasons, and not because the actual bpm slows down.

First of all half of 222 isn't 74

Well, I'm wondering why what you quoted there is in place. Technically, hold sliders are 0.25x or even 0.125x, and I think it worked really well.

Technically you can get around it by making the rest of the map 2x and making the hold sliders 0.5x, though, so that guideline can even be bypassed, so what was the point of putting it there? o.o

If you were wondering about the guideline, it was put in place so ppl do not add uninherited timing sections which can mess up the offset by +/-1ms and were not originally intended to be used to make custom slider speeds. There might be other reasons, but given my lack of knowledge of these issues, I will not comment about them.

Because then people have to sacrifice higher slider speed to achieve 0.25x since the range would be 0.25x to 1.0x when you do that

Oh.

That seems pointless. ~_~ I've heard that osu! naturally fluctuates +/- 5ms, which is more than that problem could even cause. Oh well, thanks for the clarification.

Thirded then, I was going from memory :/

The BPM should be 222 all the way through.

222/3 = 74 so yeah they are trying to achieve 0.33x?
ouranhshc
its easier to do that than to do what some people suggested
RandomJibberish
What are people suggesting? You remove the BPM changes and use sensible 0.75 speed change instead? Becase that's what you should be doing :V

Also, here's another thing I realized (but forgot to post). As long as the BPM you're using for the altered slider speed is a rational number, the timing won't go off at all, so why can't that be rankable? o_O

Simple answer
Cuz peppy said so

Besides the reason that Peppy said so (though this reason is enough most scenarios, including this one), the other reasons is that it screws up the pulse rate of the pulsating osu! logo and screws up the offset slightly (as I mentioned on the previous page).
RandomJibberish
It also screws up tick rates.
