To all people that drop into forums and post "play more"
sometimes to raise your post count... I can't wait to see how many people post play more in this forum
Congratulations, you've just stated the most obvious piece of advice to getting better at osu! Unfortunately, by the time you post play more, it's likely that at least 5 people have posted it before you -- at which point you posting play more is pretty useless, and suggests that you haven't read the thread up to the point it's currently at. If you don't want to read my argument coming up next, at least scroll down to the bottom and read the tl;dr.
Now that's out there, if anyone wants to argue that just posting "play more" is more useful than posting ACTUAL CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE, this is the thread to do so. The phrase "practice makes perfect" has been around a really long time, and it carries a fair amount of weight with it. The people that are top ranked at osu! don't go around asking other people for advice, because they've "play more" so much they've developed their own style, and they know their weaknesses and what they personally need to do in order to improve. With newbies, it's a different case.
I've got a pretty decent group of friends I've gotten into this game, and watching them develop has been really interesting. I've noticed that generally, they like to play songs far above what they can even clear, and it results in them playing the beginning of a song 50 trillion times to try and pass it and move on to the next section. Those 50 trillion plays could be better spent working on songs that are around their current skill level, or at least by turning no fail on. Go look at any of the players inside of GnR that have posted some sort of "what do I need to do to improve post", and I guarantee a lot of them haven't been improving very much lately. If you're ranked 100,000+ and you can't drop a decent number of ranks after playing for a few hours, then you're doing something wrong. People form bad habits like hitting notes early or late consistently, [/b]focusing only on one type of map (stream/jump/etc.), or constantly retrying maps -- which can slow down growth substantially. New players think pp is an absolute indicator of improvement, at least tell them in your post that this is NOT the case. A lot of times, they don't know what their weakness is, or they just suck at everything, in which case it might help to tell them to work on their accuracy, and to stop playing maps way outside of their difficulty range.
If anyone is going to argue that they should just go read a guide (Endaris has a fantastic one), that's a great counterargument. Except guides are generally pretty long, and there's something special about getting feedback from other players on what they struggled with, and relating with them. Also, sometimes new players don't know that these guides exist, in which case you can.... link them in your post!
Playing more is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to improving at this game, but it isn't a say-all do all. Add something that I bolded before you just write play more and hit post. Going to a players profile and noticing their accuracy is 70%, and commenting on that takes an extra minute before you post.
What does your post count say about you?
EDIT: Oh, and to the people that have a post titled "How do I get better", you're ASKING FOR PEOPLE TO POST PLAY MORE IN YOUR THREAD.
This is directly from official rules.
Q: How do I become better?
A: This question has been asked million of times and is too vague to give a reasonable answer to. You'll become better over time if you keep playing and practicing. Instead to ask 'how to become better', try asking more specific things like 'What maps are good pracitice for streaming?' Don't expect too much if you're still a beginner, or get stressed when you make no progress. Just remember to take breaks from time to time; In most cases people play a lot better after a break.
If you wonder if your question has been already asked, then take a look on this thread or on jesus1412's thread. It saves you to be flooded by stupid and brainless comments. It also would be helpful to avoid asking all these questions again since there won't be any better answers to these questions. It also prevent us having more terrible stupid posts and to go off-topic. If you find an inappropriate post please send me a private message or use the !report function in the chat:
tl;dr
At least quote someone else saying play more. Then you're adding to someone else's lame post and emphasizing it instead of creating your own, and you still get an increase post count from it. Or just don't post at all.
