I have a tendency to poke my tablet a lot when I'm playing. Would taping some paper to the surface of the tablet reduce the amount of damage this does to my tablet surface and pen tip? And would it have a negative effect on my ability to play?

If you're just poking it then I dont see how it would affect your gameplay at all? Just tape construction paper on it and if you dont like it you can just remove it.
Unless you poke it with a lot of force it should be fine even without a cover, obviously it always wears out the pen tip faster if you poke it anywhere, but the tablet is fine. And it might change your way of playing if you drag the pen, otherwise it's all the same.
