- Don't use flash, use natural light
- Make sure the picture is evenly lit
- Adjust using "curves" or "levels" in Photoshop or GIMP, and crop as necessary.

We can just throw map quality out the window, because oh what do you expect it's free.
At the same time you can't bash someone for doing what they like.
Even if it's a sketch, cleanup is nice. Shows you care about your craft.
If this turns out to beat current affairs, in terms of quality or effort. I won't be surprised. Which, in the right or wrong context says a lot of the state of things.
