[confirmed] Ranked beatmaps being recognized as pending

Problem Details:
Some time ago I noticed some beatmaps wouldn't show up when I grouped by Rank Achieved and after a while I realised that it was because osu would mark said beatmaps as Pending if I grouped by Ranked Status until I selected them and let the Global Ranking load, which takes way longer than for other beatmaps.
It would be fine if that was it, but I have to do that every time I restart my pc or osu insists these beatmaps are Pending. I already tried reinstalling a couple times to no avail and after the latest reinstall I found out that deleting those beatmaps causes osu to crash in the process.
This issue happens with all difficulties of https://osu.ppy.sh/b/393291 and https://osu.ppy.sh/b/408082 and 2-3 difficulties of https://osu.ppy.sh/b/410473 (varied each reinstall/redownload) and on all 3 release streams.

Problem Details:

I have downloaded every beatmap that osu!direct has stored (4,000 map sets). Although, certain maps don't stay downloaded. This is evident because the same few beatmaps always appearing again and again on the osu!direct non-downloaded beatmaps list.

List of some of the maps with this problem:
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/44867
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/161066
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/168111
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/194188
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/227126
(These are not the only maps that have this problem for me. These are the maps that have deleted themselves in the last 8 or so hours. Sometimes some of these maps stay around for a day or two.)

I have tried installing these maps through other means. I have tried playing all the maps in each map set many times which seemed to work for a few days, but the maps ended up uninstalling again.

This has been going on for many months now. If you can help, that would be great.

Is the beatmap folder (located inside osu!\songs) itself actually gone? (I doubt it is, because that would be inexplicable.)
If not it's likely an issue with osu! being able to either read the map's folder (and files) or an issue with your osu!.db file.

That said, could you check the permissions for the affected beatmap folders (and files inside them) and compare them ones that aren't affected by this issue, and see if there's any difference? If so, you could try to change the permissions of these folders and see if that works. Otherwise all I can really suggest is moving your osu!.db file out of the installation folder (this will mark all your maps as unplayed) and see if the issue is gone after that.

And one last thing, in your osu! folder, do you have osu!.db files with long number strings behind them? (eg osu!.db.98465436531) (If so this could be a sign of the file getting corrupted somehow.)

The two mania beatmaps you cited also give me a problem (posted about it here: t/329236), so I downloaded the others you cited and they give me the same problem (get marked as pending and crash osu when I delete them), but they never got deleted by themselves for me.
I thought that maybe you use the "Delete all unranked maps" function in options for whatever reason, but when I tried it I found out that it says "0 maps will be deleted" even though the maps in questions are still marked as pending...
TheVileOne
I'm looking into this problem. I can replicate this behaviour.

Yes, the beatmap folder is actually gone for me.

I couldn't find any differences within the properties.

My osu! folder does not have any osu!.db files.

I can't get the game to crash. I can get the maps to appear as pending but they are removed just fine. They will show the correct status if you leave song select and return to it and have global selected.

Hmm, Imma try reinstalling and seeing if it still crashes, maybe something got corrupted along the way

Yea, I can't get the game to crash either.

At first reinstalling had fixed it, but when I tried deleting this map specifically: https://osu.ppy.sh/b/410473 it came back and happens again with all maps in question, really weird

That's odd, that map has never given me any problems. I wonder why we have certain maps that cause problems for both of us and some that only bother one of us.
TheVileOne
This looks to be a server side problem related to these maps. They are giving strange ranked status values. Some of them are returning duplicate map data that is corrupting the submission status. I'm still not sure about the crash. There has to be a notification or something if this is crashing.

Edit:

It seems to happen to newer maps as well. But I can find no obvious pattern in the maps that work and the ones that don't. If you want to replicate, just have local ranking set and download one of these maps. The ranking icon will be a question mark. If you have RankedStatus group mode set, it will put the map in Unknown classification, but it does this for all the maps. Refreshing the group will put the maps in pending instead if you don't update the online scores.
Topic Starter
Elduris
I found out a couple more things about the crash. It will only happen if I delete that map (https://osu.ppy.sh/b/391522) after I refresh it into Pending from Unknown and before I confirm the online scores of all difficulties. It also won't always spread to the other problematic maps for some reason.

Here's the crash report that I found by accident if it helps any too.

I'm still having problems actually replicating it. How many maps do you have in pending? Are you just being quick and doing it before the scores load or are you preventing the scores from loading?

This is getting weirder each time I test it out. The latest step by step I did to make it crash was:
- Download and open the map on osu: The grade I got on Easy and Hard appear by their names on the list, Normal's and Insane's don't (sometimes Easy's doesn't appear too, but most times it does)
- Refresh the list: Easy (if it's grade showed up) and Hard go to Ranked while Normal and Insane go to Pending
- Now if I delete the mapset without clicking on the Insane difficulty and waiting for it's online scores to load the game crashes

Update

Only https://osu.ppy.sh/s/227126 deletes it self completely from my song folder. All other songs I've had problems are being recognized as pending or "unknown."

For me, the number of "pending" difficulties varies from none to 50 depending on how much I've been playing recently.

Latest cutting edge update seems to have fixed the crash, now only the original issue remains. Any heads up about it?

Maps don't just delete from the Songs folder. The game will ignore beatmaps it cannot load, it wont delete them. The only way it can delete maps is if there is a file/folder conflict. A newly downloaded map will overwrite existing files in its download directory.

If that's the case, then why is it that the maps that are being recognized as pending also sometimes disappear completely from my songs folder? Is this a problem on my end?

No matter where I look, I cannot find https://osu.ppy.sh/s/227126 , https://osu.ppy.sh/s/79236 , or https://osu.ppy.sh/s/63240 anywhere. I just re-downloaded them yesterday.

Edit: My problem and Elduris' problem may be different after all.

I have a problem which is similar to this, whenever I download a ranked beatmap Osu recognises it as pending and stays that way until I re-launch Osu, this is only a recent problem that has started happening in the past week or so, on the other hand I don't have any problems with crashing, just maps not appearing as ranked.

After you re-launch Osu, do the ranked maps stay organized as ranked or do they switch back to pending after a while?

They stay Ranked.
Sleepteiner
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/91005 and https://osu.ppy.sh/s/17450 are two more maps which either get reorganized as pending or completely disappear from my songs folder.

Edit: I tried re-downloading both of them without using osu!direct. https://osu.ppy.sh/b/91005 worked fine. https://osu.ppy.sh/s/17450 made this pop up the first time I tried to process it, http://puu.sh/i4ZiE/c53b3b2638.png . I'm not sure if that is related, but its probably good to know. The second time I tried to process https://osu.ppy.sh/s/17450 it worked fine. http://puu.sh/i4ZwJ/538b4bf7e7.jpg

Edit2: The "Merry Christmas" difficulty of https://osu.ppy.sh/b/194041 is moving to "Not Submitted."
Sleepteiner
I've found a temporary fix to the problem. If you switch to "Global Ranking" and click on a map then wait until the heart shows up in the top left of the screen the map gets reorganized back to ranked for about a day. If you have selected "Local ranking" then this does not work. This strategy works for every map that I have a problem with.

Edit: I am going to stay selected "Global Ranking" to see if that fixes the problem.

Edit2: Nope, didn't work.
TheVileOne
I don't have a high priority to look into this issue any further until the issue that is causing maps to be detected as pending is resolved. I have a feeling that will fix all remaining issues with these maps.
Sleepteiner
Update

My problem of maps deleting themselves happens just because I'm using the "Delete all unranked maps" option when those maps happen to be organized as pending. I originally dismissed this possibility because of when the message "# maps will be deleted" pops up, it does not count the fake pending maps, only the actual unranked maps. So, if I wanted to delete 4 unranked maps the message would say "4 maps will be deleted," but it would still delete the 5-15 other maps which had been currently reorganized as pending.

This means that those glitched maps are only being recognized as pending in specific areas in osu.

Edit: Once osu!next gets released, I'll be able to download the rest of the ranked maps without any problems. When that happens, I'll step back from osu! for a couple weeks and give a complete list of map which are having this problem, but until then, we'll just have to wait it out.
TheVileOne
They are being detected as pending. Of course that option will delete them. Now if this is deleting ranked maps that are in the same folder as an unranked map then that would be an issue.

This would make sense, but not all the maps with the pending problem are getting deleted. https://osu.ppy.sh/s/63240 always gets deleted while https://osu.ppy.sh/b/391522 just stays pending.

* Only easy diff, which doesn't even seem to have leaderboard on the osu webpage. But ingame it has.
** There is the same with this one as with "Run with us" BUT the map also shows up split in selection. Image
EDIT: On the other maps there is almost all diffs that show up in pending.

NOTE: Yes it works if you go to the map and let it load leaderboard ingame, until you restart your computer (and sometimes osu!). This problem has been tested on 3 computers(two of these had new installed Osu! and the beatmaps downloaded from the webpage).

StylipS - TSU·BA·SA (TV Size) (Mar 3, 2013)
Thuy Chi - Tuyet Roi Dem Giang Sinh (Dec 24, 2012)

I think I finally actually figured out what might causing this problem. Certain newer maps have been having this problem out of no where like https://osu.ppy.sh/s/119438 for example. I decided to check the map's page through the speech bubble button in-game when I was on local ranking and it sent me to https://osu.ppy.sh/b/842650 instead of the correct page. That map just happened to be subbmitted right around the time when the ranked map started have the recognition problem. My theory currently is that the map thinks it is a unranked map of the same song. I tested it on the other maps that we talked about before and I got the same result. https://osu.ppy.sh/s/160201 to https://osu.ppy.sh/b/533497 , https://osu.ppy.sh/s/17435 to https://osu.ppy.sh/b/115452 and so on. I'm not sure if this will help you guys fix the problem, but it's something new at least.
Endaris
The BeatmapIDs of the difficulties and BeatmapSetID of the 2 sets are identical.
Probably done by simply downloading the set, changing the Creator's name with leaving everything else untouched and adding some extra-difficulties. Upon submission the new set gets associated with the old one in some way as the IDs are identical. The new submission is probably considered the "latest" though until reconfirmation with the score-server.
All the sets you linked also have new difficulties involved(even if it's just a name change).
I just DL'd the sets for testing and for all the duplicate difficulties the Cherry Blossom Set asks me to update(even though I got the latest version), shows me "latest ranked" after updating though.
(CE-Build here)
Sleepteiner
I discovered something new again. In my most recent post I said that "the map thinks it is a unranked map of the same song." I just found out that this is partially wrong. The song of the mapset doesn't seem to matter as much as I thought, rather, I think that they get linked by difficulty name. Most of the maps that have this problem seemed to be linked by song because they would logically have some of the same difficulty names if the song is the same.

I found two examples of this.

In this mapset: https://osu.ppy.sh/s/79236, the ReySHel's Oni difficulty thinks it is ReySHel's Oni difficulty of https://osu.ppy.sh/b/271991.

In this mapset: https://osu.ppy.sh/s/362500, the Wrath difficulty think it is the Wrath difficulty of https://osu.ppy.sh/b/944778.

If I need to clarify anything, please tell me! I really hope this will help pin down the problem.
Sleepteiner
Hey... So I found something new again. This might be a big help... or it might not, I'm not sure.

This issue might be connected to banned or restricted mappers. This leads me to create a new theory about this subject. We know that this problem is connected to seemingly duplicated maps which shouldn't exist since the game checks if you are reuploading another player's map. My new theory is that there is a chance that when a mapper is banned or restricted, the game allows the reuploading of their maps which, in turn, creates the maps with this problem. This might be because the game cannot tell if the banned mapper exists or not since that mapper no longer has a profile.

Here are some examples in which my theory would make sense:

This map https://osu.ppy.sh/b/115148 is being wrongly recognized as this map https://osu.ppy.sh/b/263092. Both maps say that they were created by the mapper Furawa. The ranked mapset page leads to Furawa's user page https://osu.ppy.sh/u/102682 while the unranked mapset leads to a broken profile https://osu.ppy.sh/u/1628491.

This map https://osu.ppy.sh/b/391522 is being wrongly recognized as this map https://osu.ppy.sh/b/533497. The ranked mapset was created by Sekai-nyan and leads to his profile https://osu.ppy.sh/u/700887 while the unranked mapset was created by Cuked and leads to a broken profile https://osu.ppy.sh/u/5148547.

Not all of the maps with this problem work exactly like this, but that makes me think that the other mapsets that have this problem were created when the original mappers was restricted or banned. Those mappers would then go on to be unrestricted or unbanned later.

I hope that someone on the support team or dev team could at least look into this new theory a tiny bit. I would really appreciate it. In the meantime, I'm going to message Sieg to see if he has been restricted within the last year because his map https://osu.ppy.sh/s/362500 was the most recent map to have this problem. The map no longer has this problem because the conflicting beatmap has been deleted, but it will still be worth talking to Sieg about it anyway.

Thanks for reading! :D

EDIT: Nevermind, Sieg has disabled private message receipt. If anybody who knows him could ask him whether he has been restricted or banned for a time within the last year OR if he reuploaded another map for the base of this map https://osu.ppy.sh/s/362500. That would be great, thanks.

Nope, this issue only affects a small amount of maps and the maps that you listed in your thread are not currently being affected. Also, it seems that your bug has been fixed. Thanks for your help anyway!

Today, on September 2nd, https://osu.ppy.sh/s/421541 started to have this problem because of the creation of https://osu.ppy.sh/b/1072110.

I will ask Hyruler, the creator of the new map, how exactly he submitted that map in order to find out more about the cause of this issue. After he replies, I'll post here again with what he said.

Also, the problem turns out to probably not be only linked to restricted accounts since neither mappers are currently restricted, but that might still be one of the possible causes.

This was his reply to my message.

So, yea it still seems like the main cause behind this issue is people resubmitting other people's maps as their own. One way to fix this issue entirely would be to manually delete or relocate all of the difficulties and mapsets that are causing problems for the ranked difficulties and mapsets, but that might not be something that the osu! team wants to do.
