The auto /np thing is done if the guy playing is supporter, not if the spectator is supporter I think, as I've had at some point a guy spectating me, he didn't had supporter but he receved auto /np in spectator channel while spectating me.

other way is the following: keep the website open and osu!. the game must be in windowed mode. when spectating, if you don't have the map, the game will tell you which map is he playing. then you proceed to search for it, download it and voilá.
