How to start over learning reading?

I have no idea why am I ranked 2k, my reading is super bad compared to everyone in the <10k range.

I think I know my is my reading fucked up:
I started playing easy maps, they were super easy for me so after I've got my first SS, I've instantly jumped into playing them with mods and got many top50s on easy diffs with mods, then someone was like "oh you fag you only play easys you fucking ppv1 farmer" so he made me to start playing insanes. Well, I did the horrible leap of easy diffs to AR9 insane diffs and I regret not progressing through the course of normal >> hard >> insane >> extra.

So, I thought about starting easy diffs with DT and after about 30 maps to do the same with normal diffs and then like 100 nomod ar8 hard diffs to check results, but if you think of it, mainly maps are 1:30+ in length and it would take loooooong~ time to complete this course and I might be wasting time instead of actually improving.

So, should I do that or go with the hell of the mighty "Guitar vs Piano 180BPM HT" that helps 99% of anyone that tries it.

same to me, well some people just level up too fast in ranks, mainly because of playing dt and being half decent at it (some other people get the same ranks in like double or triple the time but they are much more consistent and read alot better. So yeah if you want to learn how to read better you should start by doing alot of ar8, go and do as much ar8 as you can and get good at it (try and change ar in edit if you can´t find suitable maps) after like a month of solid ar8 start in ar9 again and it will feel much better. do that and then you will improve reading for sure. From then on is just practice and playing the game

i started no failing ar9 insanes too until i could start passing them which took like 5000 plays.

Just wondering, what's considered good reading anyway? I've been playing easies and normals since day 1 and still do, but I never really thought my reading was bad or anything.

Good reading isn't playing high ARs like 10+, it's reading lower ARs or maps with tons of objects/patterns at your screen, take S.S.H [Exceed] or Atama no Taisou [Nogard] for examples of hard to read maps. The Big Black is also an hard to read map because of the mass amount of sliders.

Huh, I guess I'll just completely ignore reading until I can play extra difficulties then. I generally don't go beyond 4.5 stars :o.

I don't think there's a wrong way to progress in learning the game, just make sure you're listening to the music to hit in sync with the notes and following the notes with muscle memory instead of how your cursor is moving visually. Getting stuck on moving based on how your cursor is relative to the notes on the screen and hitting notes based on the approach rate is going to cause you to struggle a lot later down the road, speaking from experience here because I did this for the longest time.

Go back to AR8 songs

Judging from your top ranks you just have to stop playing with DT and start playing some harder maps without mods. Reading becomes easier when you're able to identify and recognize more patterns, which you definitely won't by playing easy songs with DT.

Not sure about the effectiveness of guitar vs piano though, personally haven't tried it seriously and I don't enjoy playing it so I probably never will.

I've heard they teach you how to read at school , should try it.

SPOILER
Play lower ar (8-9)

Having reading skills is merely just versatility in what you can read. It's what you play. If you're just going to do 100 ar8's and be done with it, that's not going to help if you stop playing them afterwards. You need to carry on playing every type of reading, otherwise you'll forget it.

These maps are difficult for other reasons besides "reading." Bad examples.

This. I wanted to practice reading a while back so filtered my songs by bpm and, starting at 220bpm or so, played up the list with no mods, playing through each song and moving onto the next one. Playing faster maps seemed more beneficial to help reading because there was more notes on the screen at a time which in turn makes the reading harder.

Wouldn't playing AR8 insanes have a similar amount of objects as high bpm AR9?
Fahe
Reading high bpm ar9 (with lots of objects) is not like reading ar8, simply because of the "reaction" factor stuff, you can somewhat mash your way through on a 250bpm and still get good accuracy, which is not possible on average bpm ar8 IMHO.

I've went through my maps and sorted you out a handful of fun stuff in ar8, hope they'll suit you ;)

https://osu.ppy.sh/b/47152 masterpiece, unavoidable reading stuff
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/65756 some bikko hard stuff
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/66623 same here
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/60858 some kirbymix here, you could try out ievan polka as well but it's really hard aside from the reading
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/93236
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/138830 jumpy low bpm stuff, one of my favorite beatmaps
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/141669
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/103020
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/31334 oldschool djpop, focusing on timing, the patterns aren't especially hard, but if the mapping style is not too harsh you can look for some more
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/249032 ar9 but really hard to read jumps, have fun with it :)

And lastly this unranked mapset, lots of different styles, but all of them fun to play : https://osu.ppy.sh/s/93706

Enjoy !

Pretty much. Difficult AR8's aren't that common although but you can just edit AR9 songs to make them AR8.

masterpiece is an hell, sorry for that "rude" reply of me after you helping me but most of those maps are old-style maps with object positioning that is no longer used in new maps and I won't benefit from playing them since I don't play old maps. thanks for replying anyways :)
RaneFire
If you don't want to play them because you're bad at them, isn't that the wrong attitude for developing your reading?

Some of those elements from old maps are still used, the difference is that old maps were mapped entirely that way, geometric with shape and line patterns. Square jumps were a product of the old mapping style and it has been carried over forever because no one really mastered them and people like to make things hard that way.
Sophia
Playing old maps improves your reading. Even if the style or pattern no longer happens and is around, that does not mean it won't improve your reading. You want to improve at reading, not at current actual patterns, I believe?
Ichi
Don´t close yourself on a certain type of map, any map and style will profit your game in a way or another. Every player should be versatile and be able to play any kind of map, preference is preference tho...
