so i spent a good portion of my early days on osu spamming with nofail on and it made me pretty bad, i havent done that in a good 7000 plays but what still lingers is that i sometimes even when i try to focus get lazy if only for a second in my reading and it causes me to break combos at places I wasn't even paying attention to so I don't even know how I broke it. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips about reading maps? This isn't AR specific problem, just a general one.

Do you guys look directly at individual notes, or don't actually focus on a specific point and just let your eyes scan the notes? I definitely have the physical ability to get more full combos but i can't seem to stop myself from lapses in my reading that i think are left over from when i spammed too much nofail on stuff i couldnt even follow...

inb4 playmore, this rank/playcount ratio is already abysmal. would like some actual advices.

I look at the general direction on the screen where the notes are. When I'm trying to be accurate, I try and be aware and conscious of all the circles and sliders in my mind.
Though I'm not the best of players so my advice isn't too relevant.

i look at probably 1/3 of the screen in every direction from where my cursor is at. the rest is a blur, lol , oonce my cursor gets closer, the blur becomes reality.

edit: nvm, sometimes i actually only see blur and that needs to be enough for dt maps .

Reading is a skill which comes naturally to you with time. If I had to guess, your lack of reading comes from playing maps which you can't keep up with instead of settling on a difficulty and getting a decent accuracy before moving on. Try finding some maps you can ACTUALLY keep up with and get a decent accuracy on those. (This assumption is based on the fact that your top ranks are Bs on maps which even I have trouble FCing)

I, myself look at each note individually. I used to look in a general area, but when I switched to note to note focus, I felt like I got better instantly. Personal preference?

Train your eyes to move to each individual note. I discovered this a couple of weeks ago and it drastically reduced the number of random misses I was getting, which allowed me to start setting decent scores.

If what you´re looking for is to go up some ranks, then my answer would be just go to a map, do it quite a few times with max focus, its a focusing problem you have if you´re about to get a good score and you get distracted, actually most people suffer from the opposite, they get tense and therefore lose combo. You should try to be relaxed but entirely focused on the map. Thats what reading is about, you have to concentrate and follow the rhytm of the map and youll be good. Alternatively you can just retry and get the full combo next time :), sometimes you miss notes... its normal just don´t take it that lightly and do an effort not to when attempting a good score.

Reverse jumps are good for this, other than that I know you said not ar specific but hey play some AR 8 it helped my reading having to think before I hit a circle other than that chill out with AR 8+ DT. chill= give it a rest

Personally for sight reading maps for the first time, after I figure out where the next note is, I look for my next note as I'm moving towards my current note and preparing to click to it.

The disadvantages to my way is that if it's a speed change, I can't really look for my next note because I have to pay attention to when exactly to click. Also, my eyes are focused on looking for the next notes, so naturally I have to rely on muscle memory to get the cursor on the note. I really don't look at my cursor at all >.<

For me I just pay attention to the rhythm of the song and click accordingly. If it's a rhythm that "flows' for me I don't really think of the note i'm on that much.

Do you have a medical condition?

Do this. It's not about the process, it's about training your eyes to not be lazy.

Also there is nothing to say that you cannot still read notes as groups, but try to avoid doing that where possible. Very fast maps will typically require group-reading anyway, and one thing you may encounter is that your eyes may still be lazy even while group-reading fast maps. That's why it helps to train focusing on individual notes on the slower songs, so that you can also group-read better on the faster ones. Otherwise you group-read the slower ones, then can't do shit on the faster ones.

I read things in patterns or groups (Which is probably why I can't play AR10). I find if I keep looking at a single note too long I'll have a bigger chance of missing the next note(s). Occasionally I'll practice peripheral reading by only looking at the middle of the screen, sometimes even with HD. It probably won't really do anything for reading but bleh, lets me watch the video/storyboard while I'm playing songs.

why not try maps like these?

@ranefire: No i dont have a medical condition, lol . Its just the way i choose to do it. :p

I've felt playing ar8 (and ar7 but not so much a:) really helps with reading. Stuff that is a bit tricky to read and/or play. More circles on the screen to confuse you. Just playing anything more anything will help, too #:

It's a pain at first but you get used to it and don't notice

I Play full screen on 1600x900 and it took me waaay too long to get used to spotting, the way i do it now is, i dont follow the cursor with my eyes, it is a blue blob in my peripheral vision. instead i actually follow the flow of the song and "virtually aim" (aka aim using instinct and knowledge of the tablet). Basically Every time a note pops up i am already looking at it but my actual hand movements are lagged behind relying only on sound and work area knowledge to press at the right time and in the right spot. it takes practice and patience, but it will help with accuracy and aim ...i thought its the only way i can play, same work area and resolution, but somehow it also transfers over to different work area scales. For example i own a Huion H10 with scope set to 2.27" by 1.56" on the work area, but i can play perfectly fine of my friend's Wacom Bamboo with the full area and a 1080p res. so its defiantly something im happy with investing time in

Do ar7 insanes

for ar 9 or above use guide lines, i would personally use wubwoofwolf skin, gambskin, or Black 2014 because the guide lines are easy to read. its helpful when your doing jumps or if you using hardrock on ar 8 or above.

I played a ton of HD DT hards to read higher AR, and I play in a decently small window so I don't have to turn my head a lot.

Play count has NOTHING to do with skill at all ever. People learn at different speeds because everyone is different.

btw this is NOT an ar specific problem like i said

i reduced my resolution a lot down to 800x600 and reading does seem easier now. I might have mentioned I can only see out of one eye so maybe that's why a much smaller play field is that much easier to understand.

I personally am "Snapping" to the notes with my eyes, so i always have the next target focussed. Used to look at the cursor but i noticed my aim is better this way.
