Also, Condemned: Criminal Origins is a fun scary game. It came out in 2006 and re-released for Steam in 2012. I remember it being really good when I played it a long time ago. I mostly watched my sister play it because I was too scared haha
There's also a second Condemned game, but it didn't release for Steam, only for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Alan Wake is pretty good. You might also want to check out a bunch of RPG Maker games like The Witch's House. Those are pretty scare. also, DOOM 3.

There are loads of scary games, mostly based on Unity Engine, some are worse and some are worth to play. Personally, I liked Erie, Bunker 16, The Cursed Forest, Imscared: a pixelated nightmare, Siren: Blood Curse, Vapour, Doorways, Neverending Nightmares, The Train, Fran Bow, Insanidade, Vanish, 7 Days, Kraven Manor, Pesadelo
And, of course, Amnesia, Outlast and Silent Hill.

Penumbra, it's actually scary unlike Slender or those games
Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, F.E.A.R., maybe Outlast from the more recent games.

Slender or Slender Man are probably the best free scary games unless you wanted to like torrent it or something, but you didn't hear the torrent info from me 
Daylight will come soon. I got a beta version ftm. I's rly cool and scary.

Penumbra is a horror with great deal of puzzles. So, if you want to get scared and you don't want to think much, Penumbra might be... a bad choice :] And the best Penumbra is the first one. Other parts are only trying to continue the success of the first Penumbra.

this game have "screamers" for all the game xDScreamers are so cheap... The good horror game has to have at least some creepy atmosphere apart from a bunch of "screamers". They can make you frightened, but you might as well play some flash games with screamers, that's not the point...
I suggest scary maze game, 11/10 would play again

You must play "DreadOut". The graphics are tooo awesome and the atmosphere is a bit creepy. The storyline is great wherein the highschool students got separated and stuff like that. I highly recommend it.
