When exactly is an Easy diff (STD) needed?

The lowest diff required for Ranking Criteria is Normal diff, how about Easy diff?

Can Easy diff be applied to all types of songs?
or there are some types of songs that are not suitable for Easy diff, such as BPM, Genre, or other factors?

for example, a song with 158 BPM and a festive vibe (like this beatmap I'm making). Should I add Easy diff? Or is it unnecessary (because it doesn't match the song) and let Normal diff be the lowest diff?

When the lowest diff in a spread is a Normal diff, the RC gives it some additional limitations. Therefore, if you also have an Easy diff, you have fewer restrictions. This can sometimes make the Normal diff a lot easier to map.

For example, when I mapped a Normal GD for a set of Kantan na Koto by THE ORAL CIGARETTES, the Easy diff saved me from having to come up with intuitive ways to simplify the somewhat complex rhythms in the song. Instead, I was mostly able to just map what the song gave me, ultimately resulting in a better map overall.

tldr whether or not you want to have an Easy diff is entirely up to your personal preference (unless you make a Normal diff first and it's way too hard to be the bottom diff of the set)

I got it, thanks for the explanation

Putting lewski's situation aside :

Technically an [Easy] diff is almost never needed. The only case where you're *absolutely* obliged to have it nowadays — that I can think of — is when you want to rank a Featured Artist beatmap with the goal of having it to be bundled among the default beatmaps, as everything in this pool is required to have a full spread starting from [Easy] and above (for the reason that they have to be beginner-friendly).
