If you go straight to the Editor, and edit a map, the opacity of the background depends on how much you dimmed the background in the settings. For example, I put the background dim at 70% in the settings. Going straight to edit a map will make the background darker.
If playing a map first, then going to the editor will make the background okay. It's kind of annoys me when there's storyboard.

Replication Steps:

Make sure you have a dim set for global dim.
Start osu!
Go directly to editing a beatmap.

osu! version: 20140329test

Can't replicate... :/
Also, is it possible you can add screenshots to make it more clearer...

In the settings, the background dim must be more than 50% I think. Try with 70%.
To replicate, open osu!, and go straight to edit and choose a map. You'll see the background dimmed.

Ah, able to replicate.
Go into options, change the dim, restart Osu!, go into edit and the background automatically dims.

I'm not sure I understand what's supposed to be going wrong.

You'll notice that the opacity of the background, if you didn't play a map.

I actually liked being able to dim the editor background. Made it easier to map for me.

Same for me, mappers should be able to set the background dim they prefer directly from the editor imo

I'm sorry guys. Just make a request that makes the background dim in the editor every time. Not after opening osu!.
