English is not my native language, sorry for errors.

This post will include a little story about me, as I think it might help you guys answer my questions, so here I go.

I started playing Osu! in 2017, I was pupil at the time living not the best part of my life and Osu! was my way to escape from problems, and it helped me a lot. So somewhere around 2020 I started to think about creating my own maps, I started paying attention to how notes are placed, what sounds they try to represent etc. While mostly I had no problems with that, maps from certain authors (mint for example) made me hate them (maps, not creators), because I had no idea what I was looking at. This made me think that I can do better, make a good map that everyone will enjoy and will be possible to read.

That was my first mistake, I tried to map OOParts (by Camellia), idiotic idea, but at the time I was actually believing in my abilities, I created cool bg and after that... spend 3 hours mapping first 30 seconds of the song because I couldn't choose if I want long notes to represent piano or not, should I make just a basic 1/4 long LN, or fancy 1/8 one, should I move them by one line just for fun, as some mappers do etc. At the end I dropped the map not even beginning it.

After that I dropped Osu altogether, returning to it once a month, playing without acc for fun.

And now I can finally begin to speak about present day. At the start of the summer 2024 I promised myself to make at least 1 map, no matter if it's good or bad. As you can look at my profile, I failed myself once again.

I understood that you need to begin low and go high as your mapping skill grows, so I started looking for easier songs, this time I selected Symphony (Guilty Gear Strive ABA theme), which is actually complex song, but I said to myself that I can just skip complex parts and map them as jumpstream or handstream and fix if map would be loved by at least someone. It's no surprise that I once again stucked in overthinking charts and how to fix almost all sounds, even though I understand that because of 4k limitations you can't. This one still lies in my chart files, 30 sec finished.

Here I understood my other two mistakes that I need to solve:

1. I never asked anyone for help, I wanted MY maps to be only MINE, as if asking for help will somehow decrease my impact on them or their value.

2. I started to feel hatred or even envy to other creators, every time I see unique map, most recent example being Nemesis, I understand that map is just beautiful, but them I start to be eaten by envy, How couldn't I think about such chart? It's so obvious. Am I really THAT bad, THAT stupid?

I told all of this to you, so you could understand my situation a little. It probably sound like venting of an edgy teenager, who can't get over that not everyone is suitable for everything, but I really like this game and want to create at least something creative in my life.

So what's about mapping I need help with? I will just write a list of questions and hope someone will answer at least some of them.

1. What is ACTUAL good point to start mapping?
2. How do you translate song into chart? In my 'experience' I always started with creating a 7-10K soundboard where I note all of songs instruments in specific columns, it takes hours, but I think it's worth it.
3. I know there's a lot of 3rd party tools for Osu!, but how necessary they really are to make good map? I was told it's better to use Quiver as a base mapping tool, but I hate the idea that I have to use such tools to make something such basic as a chart for Osu!.
4. Any learning programs? I remember there were mapping program in some period of time previously, where they were teaching beginners how to get into mapping.
5. How to communicate with mapping community? Does you use only this forum for this? If I need some help, do I just create post here dropping my map, or do you have any other media, discord etc.

Thanks ahead for reading all of this, even if you don't have answer. Please don't spread any hate, I just want help with my problem.

1. map simple song, most songs on radio or songs that get popular in tiktok as example
2. usually low pitch is on left side and high pitch is on the right side
3. not really, but if you want to map a "sv" map it's recommended to do so
4. there's a lot, mania has it's own discord server talking about mania
4. use discord, since forum is less active and even less active if you only on mania

1. Song with a simple rhythm and timing. You could also consider mapping something on the shorter side, like under 2 minutes ish so that you can finish it and then once you get more comfortable, try out longer ones.

2. there are many aspects when it comes to translating the song into a chart. I would recommend you to think about what u want to represent in the music. As a beginner focusing on drum might be a good idea. Consistency is very important when mapping in mania. By that i mean remaining consistent in how you represent and or pattern different sounds etc. For example if u use a single note for kick then u should do that for every kick in the section. This has some exceptions which u will understand once u keep mapping. For example the speed or intensity of the drums. After u understand this you could start experimenting with adding more layers like long notes for vocals etc, but either way 99% of the time consistency is key.

3. No, you dont truly need any 3rd party tools to map in mania, though you could consider downloading mapset verifier, hitsound copier, hitsound detective etc, but these programs wont really affect the mapping process, but are a nice quality of life if u want to rank your maps. Alternative editors like quaver can be better in some aspects i suppose but is in no way a nescessity, but more so a preferential thing.

4. You could always ask other for help or apply to the mentorship program. other things that come to mind are:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/12TYwo5mi_7go1Jm1jkhtZCYV6aRub94sfCSP8PJT48c/edit (very good guide for beginner mappers made by former beatmap nominator Crisper)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1RsagwB6NI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewvCHcKt_LE
(various videos i found on youtube)

other than that i would say that you will learn from experience. Getting feedback from more experienced mappers, then applying the general idea of the feedback in your future maps will make u improve lots as well.

5. There are many different ways. You can use the forum, or the modding queue forum which is where u submit your map for modders to look at and give feedback (community/forums/123)
you could also join the osu mania mapping hub discord server (https://discord.gg/FqbDdYN) or other smaller mapping communities.
Also don't be afraid to ask people in dms, they usually wont mind and might be willing to help. Worst case scenario they say no or ignore

Good luck mapping, feel free to dm me if u have anything u are wondering about maybe i can help :D
