Ok so first c is not the speed limit of matter. It is the speed limit of information within spacetime. Second, c as any number is complete arbitrary relative to whatever units it is being presented in. So lets throw away the units and ask ourselves why is c not faster or slower than whatver it is now?

If you think about it, that also means fruit flies, who have tinier brains, and so have signals travel less to process, would actually perceive c slower because their brain ticks faster.
Ok ok that explains why c is a certain speed, but that doesn't explain why c is a certain speed at all. Like why not 0 or infinity? Well 0 means information doesn't travel through space. It stays still. This is equivalent to having every infinitesimal point in space disconnected from every other point. Space exists as many 0D multiverses.
Now if it's infinity then information travels infinitely far instantly. Effectively it's as if information skipped traveling through space to teleport to the "end". It's like the space isn't there. In fact space doesn't exist if c is infinity. Instead of many 0D multiverses it's just one 0D universe. I suspect this is very close to the conditions at the moment of the big bang.
Finally let's address the elephant in the room. The speed limit c only applies to things that reside in spacetime. Waves, ripples, information embedded in spacetime must travel at c. That's what this field, this fabric supports. However, spacetime itself can stretch and deform to pull things apart or bring things together at speeds much faster than c. Such happened in the first moments of the big bang and such happens inside black holes. If one makes something that can stretch space around you to pull you closer to one direction and further in the othe well then congratulations you have made the warp drive.
