How would it not be a big deal? In any large, competitive game with a ranking system there will be noise when someone takes the #1 spot. If someone surpassed Magnus Carlsen in chess tomorrow, the chess world would be in a frenzy. If someone ran a 100 meters faster than Usain bolt, it would probably even reach your ears.

In osu standard, mrekk has had the longest consecutive reign at rank 1 at 1,201 consecutive days. osu has only been around for 6,154 days, so mrekk's reign has literally been around 20% of osu's entire existence. His dominance was also arguably the most dominant, he had the longest pp gap between rank 1 and 2 ever, and through a significant portion of his reign, you could literally combine the scores from every account from everyone ever except for mrekk and mrekk would still have more pp. I remember in 2022 he was really at the forefront of the meta, he was pretty much the first one to farm dt consistency and set hybrid aim/speed plays instead of just sotarks aim as everyone had been doing before. It honestly felt like his reign would last until osu died, that's how dominant he was. (yeah ik theoretical cookiezi gaps but the reality is different)

There was only one time during his reign where it felt like it could fall, and it literally took Akolibed (he changed his name to 9MICE) having the greatest popoff in osu history 9 months ago, literally increasing the pp record from 1,381 to 1,711 in a single week. While mrekk's highest was 1,381, Akolibed had two 1,500s and one 1,700. He continued to set 1,300s for a while, but eventually ran out of steam when he was like 200 overall pp behind mrekk. Dude had the greatest popoff ever and a top play 330pp higher than mrekk (I think kobold and I are literally the only osu standard players who are active on OT with a top play above 330pp btw), and still wasn't able to overtake him, and we went back to feeling like mrekk would be rank one forever. Although he wasn't at the forefront of the speed meta anymore, he was still one of the best speed players, and his aim was still in it's own universe.

I play the game and I still don't care. It is a big deal because mrekk has been at the no. 1 spot for some time now IIRC.

it's understandable why, it's less popular of a gamemode, but I think we should share a bit of love and recognition to what is also one of the greatest osu players to ever exist, the fact that there aren't as many clips and clickbait around them doesn't mean that what motion does is any less impressive

no, osu 100% is a competitive game, it CAN be played casual, but like half the game is built with competitive play in mind

It's not hype if you don't care. I have other things to worry about regarding this game than someone getting #1. Congrats to him for being able to do so, obviously, but what else can I say or feel?

yeah of coure that's the whole concept of hype, you're not obligated to feel any sort of way, just don't disregard this as nothing relevant happening, since it's something that like 80% of osu players care about, the forums is a special case because no one plays the actua lgame

Hype? For what? I don't know him, nor mrekk. I frankly don't even know who the fuck is in the top #50 right now.

Jealously? Well, yes, I feel a bit of that, but for what? The guy has 3k hrs playtime in this game, has more been more active than me, for longer and has more overall tries than me. Of course he can be at the level of getting #1.

I'd say it's quite the opposite, the forum (outside of OT) is mostly representative of the people who care the most about the game, especially ranking. Same goes for Discord server, Youtube/Twitch channels etc. The vast majority of players are casual players who likely don't even know what pp is.
Basically anyone above #100k and most likely a lot of people under too don't care, it's just that the people who care are the only ones being active in the communities.

idk, everyone I know that plays osu have been talking about this, I think this is soemthing that most people care, it's true that people outside osu that play osu also care, but yeah, I think that people who don't care are a very small minority, mainly because this and pp records are the MOST talked about topics in osu

weird, everyone I know who plays osu doesnt seem to care, there was a quick mention of this in one of the discords I'm in and the discussion lasted for about 5-6 posts before being dropped for more interesting discussion about charting
