Windows 10 will be no longer supported in 15 months only, I don't think it's worth installing Windows 10 now.

---

Also based decision of switching to Linux
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is supported until 2032 and can be downloaded to Massgrave.

I wish you luck OP on your journey. Take your time.
do not use an iot version of windows for general use, it's the successor to windows embedded and is designed for devices like point of sale terminals or industrial tech. iot eol is still 2025. ltsc eol is 2032 but ltsc is used for devices like medical equipment where "upgrading" means building/buying a new device entirely, you don't want to use this version either.
windows 10 eol doesn't mean it stops working entirely and everyone immediately has to switch to a different os, it just means there will be no more security updates or technical support, the latter of which probably doesn't apply to anyone here unless they're a sysadmin (or something similar) who has to actually talk to microsoft for support. harden your system, don't be a moron and don't download stupid shit. if you're worried about programs not working properly (like video games), remember that win7 eol was 2020 but steam didn't drop support for it until 4 years later. you'll have a decent chunk of time after official support drops before third parties start pulling the plug. could you imagine how much of a shit show it would be if something like steam killed support on the same day as microsoft does lol.
Also end of support by software providers means new software/versions will not support the OS but the older versions will still work.

In all seriousness, quote me or DM me or something if you've got questions. Can't guarantee an answer, but I've been using this crazy penguin OS since 2002...

Yes, but not getting security updates can be a huge problem and put your computer at risk indefinitely if a flaw is discovered (which I think will be). I strongly recommend to NOT use an OS without security updates, especially if it has internet connection

personal use pcs are generally not targeted in the same way companies/corporate environments are, obv there's a risk inherent in using an os past eol but you have to weigh your own ability to assess threats/harden your system. again, there's not going to be a massive downgrade in operability/massive increase in vulnerability next october, it'll be a a slow shift. I can't really recommend using win10 past eol but that's mostly on principle from the sysadmin part of my brain. if you want to continue using it (like I'm going to), run a third party antivirus on top of windows defender, lock down your browser(s), heighten uac. if you can make windows bitch at you for any change made to your pc, do it.

the only caveat I guess I'll make is that if windows defender is slated to also stop working next october, you probably prioritize switching. this won't happen tho, defender for 7 and 8/8.1 still work and defender for those ones is basically a second program. win10 defender is part of the os

Windows Embedded was a special installer of Windows that allowed you to enable or disable components at install. You could enable everything a normal version of Windows had and it will just work without any issue. Here's a video about a computer with this OS in mind, where the host explains a bit about Windows Embedded and we see the install process (you can skip to the chapter where he installs Windows 7 Embedded, since he mostly talks about the hardware first and then the software):

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise provides the same functionality as Windows 10 Enterprise, which provides the same functionality as Windows 10 Pro but with extra features for businesses. Thus, you can use this version of Windows as if it was Pro or Home. Here's a snippet from a Microsoft Learn page talking about Windows IoT Enterprise:
Windows IoT Enterprise is a full version of Windows Enterprise that delivers enterprise manageability and security to IoT solutions. Windows IoT Enterprise shares all the benefits of the worldwide Windows ecosystem. It is a binary equivalent to Windows Enterprise, so you can use the same familiar development and management tools as client PCs and laptops.
There is a version of IoT named IoT Core, which is much smaller and isn't just Windows 10.[source]

From my own experience, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is literally just Windows 10 Pro, but it has some features removed and some features added from Pro, alongside being on the LTSC. For instance, I immediately noticed that IoT has Cortana removed and Microsoft Store also removed, and the only inconvenient thing I had to deal with was the fact Filelight is only officially available on the Microsoft Store from what it seems.

You're right that normal Enterprise dies in 2025, however, on massgrave, you can't download the normal Enterprise ISOs, only the LTSC versions.

You're right that EOL doesn't mean Windows 10 just dies immediately, however, it will slowly become more and more exploited and unsupported. If you're worried about that, but you don't want to use Windows 11 and you can't use Linux, feel free to use Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC. It is the best solution IMO.

You will fuck up horribly because you're a beginner when it comes to Linux. Of course you will mess up. Backup your stuff somewhere securely and just try your heart out. It is okay to fuck up horribly because that's how you learn.

I worked with windows embedded/iot at my previous job for roughly 6 years but admittedly I never configured the installs per device, every device I worked with had a pre-built factory image. also never grabbed isos off massgrave, every place I've worked with ltsc in their environment already had isos locally or we could pull directly from microsoft. if massgrave has ltsc isos then yeah honestly use that rofl.

Yep. They offer LTSC ISOs. They say on their downloads page that the links go to genuine files and they also provide things required for verification, so yeah.

I haven't had it happen to me when using linux either but I'm not a daily user, I have friends who have had grub nuked by a windows update tho. it does it to itself too, sometimes I'll pull an update and after reboot I'm greeted by uefi and windows isn't in my boot devices. I have a win10 boot disk laying around and it's fixed p easily with bootrec. no clue why it happens and I've been seeing it for like a decade about as frequently as the win7 log bloat glitch

Welcome to linux hope you like it!

if you want to get osu! stable use the osu-winello script
https://github.com/NelloKudo/osu-winello

(if you have any issues the poon discord is a great place to ask for help. They also have a Linux channel where you can ask for help as well.)

if you want to get osu! lazer then you can download the flatpak from your appstore or download the appimage from the osu! github.
https://github.com/ppy/osu

if you are playing any steam games make sure to check out ProtonDB and review games that work/don't work

https://www.protondb.com/

Proton (For Steam games) and Wine are going to be your friends for any apps that don't have any native Linux version.

(I have heard of Lutris and Bottles but I have never messed around with those much)

It looks like you are using regular Ubuntu and I have heard people recommend to delete snaps (like flatpaks but worse appearently) but idk much about that.

Yes, I have tried Linux (mint xfce to be exact) and while I do like it I don't think I'll switch to it permanently, I will primarily use it for dual booting.

I've heard about Windows Update just nuking grub or grub itself nuking grub (that's why we stan systemd-boot), but I didn't hear Windows Update nuking the bootloader on Windows.

you can find loads of threads on answers.microsoft and it's frequent enough that when you look it up on a search engine, third party backup solutions like easeus have blog posts that double as instructions and adverts for their software. happens to server versions as well, incredibly annoying
