Windows 10 will be no longer supported in 15 months only, I don't think it's worth installing Windows 10 now.xch00F wrote:

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is supported until 2032 and can be downloaded to Massgrave.Corne2Plum3 wrote:

I don't know, but I've recommended Mint, Fedora and Nobara before here very recently. Linux Mint is pretty much newbie proof, Fedora is a bit more advanced, but offers more up-to-date packages(programs) than Ubuntu/Mint, Nobara is a gaming distro based off Fedora, maintained by a guy who develops Proton alongside Valve and works for the corp behind Fedora (Red Hat)cr0w wrote:

Yeah, using Kali or other specific-use distros is like driving a forklift instead of a car, it technically works but it won't be a good experience.Winnyace wrote:

In 2023 about 10% of computers worldwide ran on Windows 7 despite mainstream support being stopped in 2015 and extended support in 2020. Most of them were probably from companies/public administrations. I've actually had to use it a few years ago because of that.Polyspora wrote:

Enterprise licenses probably last longer, though.Karmine wrote:

Windows 10 will probably still be used in companies long after 2025.
Yeah Enterprise support ended in 2023 but it still took some time for all companies to change, also some of them use Home or Pro.Winnyace wrote:

do not use an iot version of windows for general use, it's the successor to windows embedded and is designed for devices like point of sale terminals or industrial tech. iot eol is still 2025. ltsc eol is 2032 but ltsc is used for devices like medical equipment where "upgrading" means building/buying a new device entirely, you don't want to use this version either.Winnyace wrote:

Also end of support by software providers means new software/versions will not support the OS but the older versions will still work.xch00F wrote:

windows 10 eol doesn't mean it stops working entirely and everyone immediately has to switch to a different os, it just means there will be no more security updates or technical support, the latter of which probably doesn't apply to anyone here unless they're a sysadmin (or something similar) who has to actually talk to microsoft for support. harden your system, don't be a moron and don't download stupid shit. if you're worried about programs not working properly (like video games), remember that win7 eol was 2020 but steam didn't drop support for it until 4 years later. you'll have a decent chunk of time after official support drops before third parties start pulling the plug. could you imagine how much of a shit show it would be if something like steam killed support on the same day as microsoft does lol.

Yes, but not getting security updates can be a huge problem and put your computer at risk indefinitely if a flaw is discovered (which I think will be). I strongly recommend to NOT use an OS without security updates, especially if it has internet connectionKarmine wrote:

personal use pcs are generally not targeted in the same way companies/corporate environments are, obv there's a risk inherent in using an os past eol but you have to weigh your own ability to assess threats/harden your system. again, there's not going to be a massive downgrade in operability/massive increase in vulnerability next october, it'll be a a slow shift. I can't really recommend using win10 past eol but that's mostly on principle from the sysadmin part of my brain. if you want to continue using it (like I'm going to), run a third party antivirus on top of windows defender, lock down your browser(s), heighten uac. if you can make windows bitch at you for any change made to your pc, do it.Corne2Plum3 wrote:
