my love for music started in about 2007, listening to my CD player (with those shitty headphones that were thin and used on computers in class) in the back of my mother’s Jeep Grand Cherokee. the only song I ever remember listening to on it was Beautiful Soul by Jesse McCartney. Around that age I discovered Green Day (Wake Me Up When September Ends), Jason Mraz (I’m Yours), along with Poison (old school rock band).
I’ve always sung to songs in the car, no matter who I was with or where I was. My sister did choir, I did band, both throughout middle school. I was introduced to Eminem around 13-14 (Rap God, Marshall Mathers LP1/LP2) but my own music taste didn’t grow until things got impossibly worse at home.
I was some scrawny, near anorexic bus boy at a family owned bar and grill on the outskirts of Memphis. I hated talking to people and loved working/being away from home. They let me have headphones and stay isolated, which is a core behavior I hold to this day.
I was 16 then, loved the Hamilton soundtrack and twenty one pilots. Spotify autoplay/recommended whatever introduced me to what I love now. I remember listening to Butch by Saint Motel, Shake Me Down by Cage The Elephant, and “I’m Not Crying. You’re Crying, Are You?” by Dear and the Headlights for the first time and just, falling in love with music I could connect to? Especially in a moment in my life where going home wasn’t guaranteed.
Music is the only thing I really feel like I can trust, relate to, express, experience catharsis to?
My love for creating it came when I had my “traumatic” life changing move at 17. I remember when the sheriff deputy of my then county told me not to bottle up my emotions or they’ll explode and I’ll hurt people. He used a Pringles can as an analogy.
I used it as a way to express my emotions and frustrations, rather than keep them against myself.
I still struggle a lot. But music keeps me going.
