i just realized that ive been working on a 5 minute song for about 2 months for maybe a couple hours more or less daily and i only have about 25% of it done. i have motivation to work on it im just very slow and dont know why.

im not quite sure what the hell im doing but i think i spend a lot of time just obsessing over every minor thing too much, and i spend a lot of time replaying sections rather than actually mapping.

i want to just finish things faster but at the same time i dont enjoy creating something i dislike but apparently doing that requires an unacceptable amount of time.

from a general productivity perspective i think doing this casually is a problem since i work without time constraints. perhaps setting time constrainted goals would help? not sure since my guess is that i would simply just face the same issue of needing too long to make something decent.

whats a good approach to take here?

I have the same problem with not just mapping but p much every type of project and what's been working for me is to temporarily lower my standards, just finish a full rough draft of something, only then go back with my usual mindset to get it to a state im actually happy with

you could try an edit of the default skin, helped me a lot with focusing on mapping (cause its not very fun to replay sections with a skin like that, and it helps a lot with evening out visual spacing)

or map shorter songs first so you get absolute control over the editor. i assume you already know the hotkeys for the editor so this might be redundant

its kinda hard to explain but i try to keep a balance between caring and not caring bcs if you finish a map and map something else, progress and look back you will usually not like ur old map anyway. so when i ever map i just try to have fun with it rather than mapping just to map or to post

what you described is mapping 101 in a nutshell, either put the time to make a banger map or map it in 1 day and ends up being shit, its a process most of the time that all mappers go throught so dw

i learn more by making many shit maps than wasting ton of time on 1 map, theres no perfect map and taste change over time. just come back later if u still want polish stuff, not finishing a map is more waste of time
