I've been playing Osu! for 8 months now.
Lately i've been getting dry eyes where I have to blink like twice as much as normal.
When I play other games, my eyes seem to be fine.
Does osu! hurt your eyes? My skin has a lot of elements and special effects.
Heinzen
Getting dry eyes could be because your screen is too bright and your room is too dark, which causes stress to lubricate your eye-balls.

Overall osu does not cause any type of eye condition, the only known one was cookiezi's eye problem (Xerophthalmia) but that's something the person is born with.

No, osu won't damage your eyes unless you have a really bad setup for playing osu like I stated before, bright screen/dark room or something else.
Bweh
Avoid environments with high lighting contrast if you want your eyes to survive. Make sure you're sleeping properly too.
Keeby
I don't think osu! is the problem since I think I play the game too much and I don't have those issues. If you're not having the problem with other games, it may just be a conscious/placebo problem. I'd recommend not worrying about it too much unless it becomes serious.

just make sure your room isn't too dark and the game shouldn't hurt your eyes.
Myke B
turn your gamma down, turn the lights on, and maybe sit back if you're too close. Unless you have an actual condition - then no, osu is not your problem.
Heinzen
Oh, and just as an example, I play something around 10 to 15 hours a day with a dark room but a properly setup monitor. No problems on my end.

Try a program called f.lux, it's a program that basically does what gunnars (those gaming glasses) try to achieve. I used to get dry eyes with my monitor, f.lux helped a lot. I just keep it at an incandescent/halogen lighting.

Can verify, I started using flux and it makes everything look orange and you'll think its strange at first but you'll adjust to it. If I ever turn off flux at night everything just looks so insanely bright.

Xerophthalmia is not something you are born with, most of the time it is caused by a poor diet (but there can be other causes).

osu! itself? No. Your screen can if the conditions line up but how to prevent that has already been covered.

You should go see a doctor - preferably one who specializes in eyes - when you can. They have a much higher chance of figuring out what's up with your eyes than you or the internet.

Some people including most top players focus their vision on each individual circle/cursor

Unlike you

You weird fucking alien <3

I stated using glasses because of osu!, and I have to manually blink when playing

Well looking at a computer screen for lengthy periods of eyes does make your eyes worse...

No one noticed this...

I think this is normal. I blink a lot when playing osu!

You may not notice it, but there are periods where you don't blink at all for up to a minute. Either caused by you finally starting to play harder maps that don't give you time to blink, or just concentrating harder unnecessarily. That's when your eyes get irritated because the surface of your eye is not getting the needed lubrication, yet still moving around a lot. That's why you feel the need to blink incessantly thereafter. It doesn't happen in other games because you don't move your eyes that much in other games, and a lot of the time in FPS games where you don't blink, you're just staring at one spot.

Personally I hate using a fan or having anything even remotely related to a breeze in my face. My eyes dry out almost instantly when playing osu!, but if I'm not playing osu!, I can probably stand using a fan for about 3 hours without a problem, although only from the side. It's because you're not blinking at first, and then blinking a lot afterwards, that you think there's a problem.

I second this, that skin is amazingly easy on the eyes

But that's your fault for looking at the screen for too long, not osu. It could happen if you kept using Word and Excel aswell.

This game doesn't give you anything. As I said, if you spent the same time that you spend playing osu doing anything else, even playing anything else, your sight would deteriorate if you have a poor setup.

I spend 8 to 12h a day, but I have a proper set monitor, a gloomy skin and eye-pleasant settings. My sight is the same if not better than before.

if you play guitar hero for a bit, and then glance at a wall - it looks like the wall is melting, morphing or w/e. I guess this doesn't happen to everyone, but it happens to a lot of people.

I second this.

surprisingly, taiko doesn't do anything for me.
Kaeru
Taiko forces you to pay attention to a lot of stuff at once (at least if you're playing fullscreen on a wide monitor) on fast songs with high AR. You can't just look at the left side of the screen, or you won't know what's coming, but you need to be focused on it in order to hit notes accurately (unless you know the song well). I'm guessing once you get better it's less of a problem (I'm a terrible taiko player, but one of the reasons I don't play it is because it bothers my eyes and I find it really disorienting).

It may be different for others -- I'm just sharing my experience. It is a great way to train your peripheral vision, though.
Myke B
It's probably just because I'm not very good at taiko yet :P
daredakke
Osu! has never affected my eyes aversely thankfully.

It's just the compulsive blinking I do whilst playing that makes me mess up.
Scinder
Speaking personally, osu has been pretty hard on my eyes (but as many people pointed out, may just be from looking at monitors for extended periods of time). Age also has an impact on me i'm sure. One issue I have with osu in general is after playing for ~1 hour, my eyes get blurry, if I keep playing it gets to the point of not being able to read words on web pages without zooming in. So for me, the possibility of osu being bad for my eyes is pretty high. Just take breaks and you should be fine.

Depends on the person, but it also depends on your monitor.

I play on an 8 year old 17" with CCFL backlight. Everything that moves is extremely blurry, but I kinda prefer it instead of a LED backlight because those still blurr. The difference is LED backlight will blurr multiple clearer and more detailed images, which I find much more disorienting to focus on than a smooth blurr. This is all solved by cashing out on a freaking awesome monitor though... which I don't really feel like doing. In my country it costs nearly 3 times more than the exchange rate for a high-end 120hz monitor for that much-wanted lightboost feature.

You can get used to it. I have been getting used to it to the point I barely even notice the blurr anymore. The human brain is amazing, but I'd rather I didn't have to go through the ordeal of my eyes involuntarily twitching the whole time for 2 weeks solid :/ I felt like punching myself.

After I played Mania and look at an other thing, then I feel like I'm on drugs

In osu!Standart sometimes I get red eyes and then I look like I'm on drugs

So but I have everytime very dark circles around the eyes so I look everytime like I'm on Drugs

any game will be bad for your eyes if you continuously stare at the screen for prolonged periods of time (ask the ex-#1 player in the world who left us last year).

just blink when you have a break in the beatmap / when the pattern is simple and predictable or something

pretty much this is the problem imo. Try using minimalistic/simple skins, they help a lot. One of the examples would be:

as for Taiko, skinning is also involved. Using both plain hitcircle and overlay will 'eliminate' the blur existing in the default skin (and maybe some other skins), and making the taiko-bar-right-glow.png (which shows up in Kiai time) into the same as the regular one greatly helps reducing eyestrain.
