Hello, this is my first forum post so I apologize if it doesn't fit the rules of a perfect thread ! Also Ih hope my english is good
So I wanted to talk about this idea which is stuck in my mind, piano needs a better rhythm game. Let me give some context first :
I have been playing osu! since 2014, and I have dedicated hundreds if not thousands of hours into the game. I have always been a musician, mostly playing the drums, and a fan of rhythm games such as Guitar Hero and, of course, osu!.
Just look at how great some people have become at playing the drums just by playing Drum Hero as a game !
I MUST not be the only one to have this idea, I will not be the last one either. But it triggers me why there are no better rhythm games dedicated to learn the piano than Synthesia and a few other copycats.
For example, guitar players have had Rocksmith which made quite the achievement by beeing available on console ! The thing used a jack-to-usb converter to capture the notes you played which is pretty cool. Even though it was a closed game made by a private company, this thing still had a score and notation system which felt pretty close to what osu! and others have.
Osu! also has mania, obviously, which could be compared to playing the piano as you are litteraly playing the keyboard (this video of someone playing piano on mania is also pretty incredible). But it is a giant stretch to consider this gamemode "piano-like".
I still have to see a game which could mimic the Synthesia gameplay while having an environment as nice as what osu! gives to the player.
I mean, imagine an [open source] software, your favorite rhythm game, which trains your piano skills.
Imagine a score system which lets you compare to your friends performances. You could see your replays, study where you were dragging or rushing (not quite my tempo !!).
Imagine a built-in editor, which lets you create your own beatmaps (MIDI files ?) to whichever song you would like, in the same software.
Imagine having a user-submitted based environment which lets you learn any song the community has to offer.
You would be able to choose the song difficulty, not only reducing or increasing the songs BPM.
You could add mods to your gameplay such as Hidden, Flashlight or Hard Rock to pump up the challenge !
Why not having a multiplayer room to play with your friends or friendly strangers ?
Even the simplest things as scrolling through your songlist feels nicer in this game.
Osu! already offers all of these beautiful features, and more, but the piano universe just lacks this kind of game.
I honestly think having this kind of fun way to learn an instrument would encourage people to go way further than they would have normally.
Osu!Lazer already provides MIDI support, and because this project is made open-source by the devteam, I can only be highly hopeful and optimistic this kind of software/gamemode will exist one day or another.
I already feel like this is starting to be a long post so I just hope I have tickled some of you's interest to discuss it further !
