Anything that walls-off content behind accounts is crap. X luckily is near-useless (aside from the abhorrent people really there for what "free speech" implies), but everyone having their communities on Discord is disgraceful.
Any time I hear of TikTok it's either something dumb, or some other negative connotation. I'll trust I'm not missing anything by never trying it.
YouTube is basically essential as a video host and videos are free to look at without an account. I'm fine with YouTube by itself, but I have no interest in reels/shorts and haven't had to view any. Some of my uploaded short videos look changed to YT shorts now which is kind of gross, and if I figure out if I can opt-out of that it'll be done.
I never understood the concept of Instagram. Do people just upload photos without categorization? I tried it a few times and ended up deleting my accounts after a few days of not getting it. I would have liked to use Threads over X, but tying it to IG was a mistake.
The FB groups I've seen and been in were ok. It's still walled-off, but I give FB's massive size a pass on that; I keep an account mostly for Messenger. FB seems to be the most tame mainstream network today, but I have issues with Meta.
I've self-hosted Friendica and Piwigo for my own social network and pic/videos, but I'm looking to either redo it with a distro switch soon (SELinux is a PITA on-top of Fedora breaking more and more), or just settle on some Mastodon instance. ActivityPub and federated/decentralized social networks is how things should be.
