Currently I've always used a mouse in osu! and it feels alright. I can average 4.5-5 star maps with mouse. I've never used tablet before and I'm wondering if it would be easier or a better choice to switch.

It isn't always better but seems to be better for most people. It's probably good to at least try tablet while it's still easy enough to transition to it.
In theory it should make no difference. However, I always find it that I rust less with tablet than with mouse. I can still aim 5* jump maps with tablet after months of not playing, but I can barely keep up with 4* maps using the mouse (also I already played with mouse for over a year when I first began).
If you want to try, then go for it!
If you want, you're early enough in the game to choose without receiving any serious drawbacks.
