Finding friends/friendly rivals in the osu community

I think it would be great for my motivation and improvement if I multi'd up with some people from time to time or something, or competing for rank (or some other goal) with other players in the community. But due to my huge shyness I dunno where to look. Curious to see how other people find these communities or just generally make friends on osu.

Getting a friend group in osu really helps (or at least it helped me a ton), I dont think we can compete for rank and stuff but you can try looking for people in lobby, asking if anyone wants to multi, and just convo there, I used to do it a lot last year and thats how I got basically all of my friends

Honestly, I didn't have any real rivals until I found my state discord, where I met other people who were of similar rank to me at the time. I can say it does help, not a lot in my case, but it did push me at times to go push my limits. Honestly, if you want to find those communities try and look for specific communities. City discord, Province, Country, general smaller osu related discords, all that. Those would be easy places to start. Hell, you could try asking around in the forums if you wanted. Just takes some digging and you will find it likely.

True, would probably be easier to play with people close to me to avoid timezone differences and shit. Probably just a case of putting myself out there and not being such a hermit all the time.

Lobbies are good if you want to find osu friends!

Yeah putting yourself out there helps a lot. Though in my case finding my state peeps was pure coincidence then actively trying

I don't really have friends, or at least I don't consider myself as having any connections strong enough to be called friends (though others may think more positively of me than that), so I can't help. Still, the stuff about discords, chat and multis is sound. Or you can just strike it up with somebody on the forums. Maybe don't directly go to DM-ing everyone, but maybe somebody who responds to this thread is in your rank range and worth keeping an eye on, or has a playstyle or goals that you align with/admire. Or (shameless self-plug) you can keep an eye on my monthly challenges (maybe even participate yourself in the August one) and perhaps strike up a friendship with those in or around your bracket.

choose mulit play, when playing for several maps, you can ask other players to be your friend.I usually do this, connecting with the same hobby.

Back when I was doing this I would usually just make "one-sided rivalries"; what I mean by this is I would try and compete with other players without them knowing (I hardly message other players because I'm also too shy). You can also look at the UK leaderboard around your country rank and try to make some friendly rivalries. Most osu! players are really nice so you shouldn't be too worried about messaging them, but I know how it is (I've been playing for ~5.5 years and most of the time if I message someone they message me first).

Honestly for me having rivals is just more demotivating. Like I used to have a rival back in like 2021, and I remember even though I was putting an ungodly amount of time into the game, he just always improved faster than me even though he barely put time into the game. Everything takes way more effort for someone like me compared to most, so it just becomes demotivating watching friends effortlessly destroy my skill level ive spent thousands of hours across 3 years grinding for.

But I mean if it works for you, I hope you find some rivals here. I can see why it could be a good motivator for some and I wish you luck on your osu improving adventures!

Judging by the fact that we're only 20,000 ranks apart, maybe u could compete with me in rank to gain motivation?
