Because the plot of SAO seems more interesting, like the gear, triangle love (maybe or multiple?), the battle (but seems unreal, because it is the game and I like it), etc.
Attack On Titan though I think has more logic plot and setting than SAO, I don't like the storyline.

Haven't watched Attack on Titan. As for Sword Art Online. I watched 5 episodes and then couldn't take it anymore because I really disliked that anime.

They're both over hyped.

Both had their ups and downs, but tbh, they're overrated. They could have been made (A LOT) better, but they just ended up pretty bad. I prefer SAO over AoT though.
Attack on titan although I'm not really a big fan of either.

I don't know about the light novel, but TOO MANY people says it's SO GOOD or the best anime ever, they are not this bad, but I don't think they are this good. Also I tried to watch both, but I were kinda disapointed when I saw it was just a blockbuster, and nothing more (for me + I couldn't finish both). I would say, too much overrated Hi ADS everywhere

I dropped SnK, couldn't stand that protagonist anymore (Ep 14 or so). I didn't really enjoy that story line, it was somehow cruel but not that interesting imo.
In SAO at least the idea was awesome. I enjoyed the whole setting and I actually liked those extremely over-dramatised scenes, way more tense than in SnK imo although Kirito was often so op.... The first arc was awesome imo, however nothing really to say about the second...

if you use "overrated" as a primary argument for discarding something, it's pretty clear you don't really have anything valuable to say. all it means is literally "other people like this more than me", unless you haven't actually watched it, in which case it's a non-statement and your opinion is not valid anyway
