if the fps rate drops seriously, then Nintendo overestimated a lot its own hardware
How the hell does Nintendo overestimates their hardware?
They just created the console at it's best of its time in terms of producing hardware in masses and for future generations for platformers to run on it smoothly- while Gamefreak actually tries to make the best out of it which they did with X & Y as it runs smoothly most of the time except of Lumiose at some parts and ofc, some other exceptions.
Actually, i agree to this and serve you this:

Yes, The Polycount for a lot of the models makes the GPU chug like nobody's business. Charizard X's Model among others are known to cause the Framerate to drop.
So basically; reduce the polycount, everyone will complain it's just half-assed made, increase it, people will complain about FPS issues.
At least we have some 3D going on in pokémon as they're having 30 mega-evolution models, 721 pokémon models with countless of genderchanging stuff... lots of morphing models and so forth... not to mention all the other stuff that's not a sprite, which is basically everything except the icons, some character portraits and probably the font itself too, this and a little bit more.
(forgot most of some other things that are in 2D but nonetheless)Oh wow, i'm ranting so much :'c
Anyways, the point here is actually, i'd rather take critcism on gameplay and story than hardware limitations when it comes to Nintendo in general- which is... X and Y are a little short ended with no post-game features but pokemon-amie and some other small mischiefs.
I could gladly remember the days of playing in the casino for 6 straight hours in moody weather, decorating the secret base to my hearts content at snowfall, let my pokemons attend in the pokeathlon or some beauty contest and tons of other post-game things when the snow melted away.
One notable thing i've really enjoyed the most though was the Battle Frontier from Emerald... damn, i've literally spent hundreds of hours playing the different areas over and over again as it was something different everytime.
It's just, X and Y doesn't have something
yet (we don't know how or even if Gamefreak/Nintendo will handle bonus content for X/Y) that binds me fully to the game except of the better breeding options and a cute little feature to interact with your pokemon, but i still love the game nonetheless, even if it lags sometimes while riding the bike in Luminose City.
